Additive Lithography–Organic Monolayer Patterning Coupled with an Area-Selective Deposition

The combination of area-selective deposition (ASD) with a patternable organic monolayer provides a versatile additive lithography platform, enabling the generation of a variety of nanoscale feature geometries. Stearate hydroxamic acid self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were patterned with extreme ultraviolet (λ = 13.5 nm) or electron beam irradiation and developed with ASD to achieve line space patterns as small as 50 nm. Density functional theory was employed to aid in the synthesis of hydroxamic acid derivatives with optimized packing density to enhance the imaging contrast and improve dose sensitivity. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy reveal that the imaging mechanism is based on improved deposition inhibition provided by the cross-linking of the SAM to produce a more effective barrier during a subsequent deposition step. With patterned substrates composed of coplanar copper lines and silicon spacers, hydroxamic acids selectively formed monolayers on the metal portions and could undergo a pattern-wise exposure followed by ASD in the first combination of a patternable monolayer with ASD. This material system presents an additional capability compared to traditional ASD approaches that generally reflect a starting patterned surface. Finally, this bottoms-up additive approach to lithography may be a viable alternative to subtractive nanoscale feature generation.

Ultrathin Free-Standing Oxide Membranes for Electron and Photon Spectroscopy Studies of Solid–Gas and Solid–Liquid Interfaces

Free-standing ultrathin (~2 nm) films of several oxides (Al 2 O 3 ,TiO 2 , and others) have been developed, which are mechanically robust and transparent to electrons with E kin ≥ 200 eV and to photons. We demonstrate their applicability in environmental X-ray photoelectron and infrared spectroscopy for molecular level studies of solid-gas (≥1 bar) and solid-liquid interfaces. These films act as membranes closing a reaction cell and as substrates and electrodes for electrochemical reactions. The remarkable properties of such ultrathin oxides membranes enable atomic/molecular level studies of interfacial phenomena, such as corrosion, catalysis, electrochemical reactions, energy storage, geochemistry, and biology, in a broad range of environmental conditions.

Estimation of abatement potentials and costs of air pollution emissions in China

Understanding the air pollution emission abatement potential and associated control cost is a prerequisite to design cost ef?cient control policies. In this study, a linear programming algorithm model, International Control Cost Estimate Tool, was updated with cost data for applications of 56 types of end-of-pipe technologies and ?ve types of renewable energy in 10 major sectors namely power generation, industry combustion, cement pro-duction, iron and steel production, other industry processes, domestic combustion, transportation, solvent use, livestock rearing, and fertilizer use. The updated model was implemented to estimate the abatement potential and marginal cost of multiple pollutants in China. The total maximum abatement potentials of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), primary particulate matter (PM2.5), non-volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), and ammonia (NH3) in China were estimated to be 19.2, 20.8, 9.1, 17.2 and 8.6 Mt, respectively, which accounted for 89.7%, 89.9%, 94.6%, 74.0%, and 80.2% of their total emissions in 2014, respectively. The associated control cost of such reductions was estimated as 92.5, 469.7, 75.7, 449.0, and 361.8 billion CNY in SO2, NOx, primary PM2.5, NMVOCs and NH3, respectively. Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Zhejiang, and Guangdong provinces exhibited large abatement potentials for all pollutants. Provincial disparity analysis shows that high GDP regions tend to have higher reduction potential and total abatement costs. End-of-pipe technologies tended be a cost-ef?cient way to control pollution in industries processes (i.e., cement plants, iron and steel plants, lime production, building ceramic production, glass and brick production), whereas such technologies were less cost- effective in fossil fuel-related sectors (i.e., power plants, industry combustion, domestic combustion, and transportation) compared with renewable energy. The abatement potentials and marginal abatement cost curves developed in this study can further be used as a crucial component in an integrated model to design optimized cost-ef?cient control policies.

Evidence for interfacial geometric interactions at metal–support interfaces and their influence on the electroactivity and stability of Pt nanoparticles

Supported metals are widely used as industrial catalysts wherein the supports affect catalytic performances remarkably through either electronic and/or geometric interactions with the metals, and/or providing interfacial synergistic sites. Herein, we observed evidence for interfacial geometric interactions (IGIs) at Pt–C interfaces through a combination of atomic-scale structural analysis, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, and electrochemical measurements for Pt/C model systems. The IGI has a long-range attribute and affects Pt surface atoms not only at interfacial perimeters but also adjacent to interfaces. The affected Pt surface atoms are proposed to contribute enhanced activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction through retarding the formation of strongly adsorbed oxygenated intermediates. Our work provides some necessary information for a better understanding of support effects and catalytically active surface sites.
