Conductive surface states and Kondo exhaustion in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7

The interplay of Kondo screening and magnetic ordering in strongly correlated materials containing local moments is a subtle problem. Usually the number of conduction electrons per unit cell matches or exceeds the number of moments, and a Kondo-screened heavy Fermi liquid develops at low temperatures. Changing the pressure, magnetic field, or chemical doping can displace this heavy Fermi liquid in favor of a magnetically ordered state. Alternatively, Kondo singlet formation can be suppressed when the number of conduction electrons is small compared to the number of magnetic moments, known as the Kondo exhaustion scenario. Furthermore we report the discovery of such an “exhausted” Kondo lattice material, YbIr 3 Si 7 , where the bulk electrical conductivity tends to zero in the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature T N = 4.1 K, as all the free carriers are consumed in the formation of Kondo singlets. By contrast, the surface is conducting, as the Yb 3+ ions relax into larger nonmagnetic Yb 2+ in the presence of reduced chemical pressure, which shifts the chemical potential.

Spectral evidence for unidirectional charge density wave in detwinned BaNi 2 As 2

In the iron-based superconductors, unconventional superconductivity emerges in proximity to intertwined electronic orders consisting of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave (SDW). Recently, BaNi 2 As 2 , like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe 2 As 2 , has been discovered to host a symmetry-breaking structural transition but coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) instead of SDW, providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, in this work, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning B 1 g uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe 2 As 2 , the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi 2 As 2 are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Furthermore, no nematic band splitting is resolved above the structural transition. Our measurements point to a likely lattice origin of the CDW order in BaNi 2 As 2 .

Unveiling the underlying interactions in Ta 2 NiSe 5 from photoinduced lifetime change

We present a generic procedure for quantifying the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in photodoped insulators through a comparative analysis of theoretical many-body simulations and time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) of the transient response of the candidate excitonic insulator Ta 2 NiSe 5 . Our analysis demonstrates that the electron-electron interactions dominate the electron-phonon ones. In particular, a detailed analysis of the TR-ARPES spectrum enables a clear separation of the dominant broadening (electronic lifetime) effects from the much smaller band-gap renormalization. Theoretical calculations show that the observed strong spectral broadening arises from the electronic scattering of the photoexcited particle-hole pairs and cannot be accounted for in a model in which electron-phonon interactions are dominant. The competing interactions were quantified using the scaling analysis in the weak fluence regime. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the weaker subdominant band-gap renormalization sensitively depends on the distance from the semiconductor/semimetal transition in the high-temperature state, which could explain the apparent contradictions between various TR-ARPES experiments. The analysis presented here indicates that electron-electron interactions play a vital role (albeit not the sole one) in stabilizing the insulating state, and establishes the comparison between lifetime and gap evolution as an important probe of correlated insulators.

Correlation-driven electronic reconstruction in FeTe 1−x Se x

Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. While the low energy electronic states in cuprates are dominantly affected by correlation effects across the phase diagram, observation of correlation-driven changes in fermiology amongst the iron-based superconductors remains rare. Here we present experimental evidence for a correlation-driven reconstruction of the Fermi surface tuned independently by two orthogonal axes of temperature and Se/Te ratio in the iron chalcogenide family FeTe 1−x Se x . We demonstrate that this reconstruction is driven by the de-hybridization of a strongly renormalized d xy orbital with the remaining itinerant iron 3 d orbitals in the emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase. Our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase into an orbital-selective Mott phase in d xy as Se concentration is reduced.

Electronic properties of epitaxial La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films

Here, we report on the synthesis and electronic properties of epitaxial perovskite La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films. Thin films with a Sr content ranging from $\textit{x}$ = 0 to 0.5 have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy. Transport and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy data reveal an insulator-metal-insulator transition, accompanied by a $\textit{p-}$ to $\textit{n}-$ type carrier change observed in Hall measurements. Combined with theoretical calculations, we find that the addition of Sr does not directly dope carriers into the conduction band, but rather induces localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ states within the LaRhO 3 band gap. The bandwidth of the impurity band increases with Sr content, eventually causing the valence band (VB) and the localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band to overlap, which explains the first insulator-to-metal transition occurring at $\textit{x}$ = 0.35. For Sr content $\textit{x}$ > 0.4, possible cation ordering results in an increase of the gap between the VB and the Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band, leading to the second metal-to-insulator transition. We map out the electronic phase diagram of the Sr-doped LaRhO 3 system and suggest strategies to engineer the electronic states in rhodate systems via delocalizing the Rh 3+ states.
