Widespread 2013-2020 decreases and reduction challenges of organic aerosol in China

Abstract High concentrations of organic aerosol (OA) occur in Asian countries, leading to great health burdens. Clean air actions have resulted in significant emission reductions of air pollutants in China. However, long-term nation-wide trends in OA and their causes remain unknown. Here, we present both observational and model evidence demonstrating widespread decreases with a greater reduction in primary OA than in secondary OA (SOA) in China during the period of 2013 to 2020. Most of the decline is attributed to reduced residential fuel burning while the interannual variability in SOA may have been driven by meteorological variations. We find contrasting effects of reducing NO x and SO 2 on SOA production which may have led to slight overall increases in SOA. Our findings highlight the importance of clean energy replacements in multiple sectors on achieving air-quality targets because of high OA precursor emissions and fluctuating chemical and meteorological conditions.

Fertilizer management for global ammonia emission reduction

Crop production is a large source of atmospheric ammonia (NH 3 ), which poses risks to air quality, human health and ecosystems. However, estimating global NH 3 emissions from croplands is subject to uncertainties because of data limitations, thereby limiting the accurate identification of mitigation options and efficacy. In this report we develop a machine learning model for generating crop-specific and spatially explicit NH 3 emission factors globally (5-arcmin resolution) based on a compiled dataset of field observations. We show that global NH 3 emissions from rice, wheat and maize fields in 2018 were 4.3 ± 1.0 Tg N yr -1 , lower than previous estimates that did not fully consider fertilizer management practices. Furthermore, spatially optimizing fertilizer management, as guided by the machine learning model, has the potential to reduce the NH3 emissions by about 38% (1.6 ± 0.4 Tg N yr -1 ) without altering total fertilizer nitrogen inputs. Specifically, we estimate potential NH3 emissions reductions of 47% (44–56%) for rice, 27% (24–28%) for maize and 26% (20–28%) for wheat cultivation, respectively. Under future climate change scenarios, we estimate that NH3 emissions could increase by 4.0 ± 2.7% under SSP1–2.6 and 5.5 ± 5.7% under SSP5–8.5 by 2030–2060. However, targeted fertilizer management has the potential to mitigate these increases.

ECEI characterization of pedestal fluctuations in quiescent H-mode plasmas in DIII-D

Here, electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) is employed to characterize the magneto hydraulics dynamics (MHD) fluctuations at the quiescent H-mode pedestals in DIII-D. Pedestal MHD fluctuations cause ECE radiation temperature fluctuations $\delta {T_{e{\text{,rad}}}}$ in both the pedestal and scrape-off-layer (SOL). A synthetic ECE platform is utilized for detailed interpretation of the ECEI signals in the SOL and pedestal regions. It is observed that the ECE radiation $\delta {T_{e{\text{,rad}}}}$, which is located in the SOL region according to the cold and optically thick plasma resonance assumption, is extremely sensitive to MHD radial displacements near the separatrix, exhibiting radiation inversion to $\delta {T_{e{\text{,rad}}}}$ at the pedestal. Here, the radiation inversion refers to the opposite phase between the radiation fluctuation at the pedestal and the radiation fluctuation at the SOL. Consequently, the quasi-coherent MHD (QCM), which displays a radiation inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial structure that has a strong displacement near the separatrix. In contrast, the edge harmonic oscillation (EHO), which displays weak or no inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial displacement structure peaking at the pedestal top. The ECEI data, interpreted with synthetic ECE, are in qualitative agreement with beam emission spectroscopy measurements on DIII-D for the relative radial extent and localization of the EHO and QCM. The high sensitivity of ECE radiation to separatrix displacements can be used to detect turbulence or MHD fluctuations near the separatrix, which may affect the transport across the separatrix and the wetted area in the divertor. The $\delta {T_{e{\text{,rad}}}}$ inversion measured with an ECE or ECEI system potentially provides important information on the magnetic field $\left| {{B_{{\text{sep}}}}} \right|$ at the separatrix, which helps constrain the pedestal equilibrium reconstruction and achieve an unambiguous mapping of the ECE/ECEI system with respect to the separatrix.

A novel optical sensor for Pb 2+ detection based on in-situ formation of Ruddlesden-Popper phase (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 PbBr 4 perovskite

On account of the concentration sensitive photoluminescence (PL) property of the lead-based Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase perovskite material, a novel sensing mechanism for highly selective Pb 2+ detection based on the in-situ formation of highly emissive luminescence structure matrix (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 PbBr 4 has been demonstrated. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Pb 2+ in complex metal cations mixture solution. This research reports a novel type of sensor mechanism based on the in-situ formation of luminescent lead-based RP phase perovskite. Here, it paves the way for developing highly selective optical sensors for detecting heavy metal cations via their corresponding luminescence structure matrix.

Process-based and observation-constrained SOA simulations in China: the role of semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds and OH levels

Organic aerosol (OA) is a major component of tropospheric submicron aerosol that contributes to air pollution and causes adverse effects on human health. Chemical transport models have difficulties in reproducing the variability in OA concentrations in polluted areas, hindering understanding of the OA budget and sources. Herein, we apply both process-based and observation-constrained schemes to simulate OA in GEOS-Chem. Comprehensive data sets of surface OA, OA components, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, and oxidants were used for model–observation comparisons. The base models generally underestimate the SOA concentrations in China. In the revised schemes, updates were made on the emissions, volatility distributions, and SOA yields of semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (SVOCs and IVOCs) and additional nitrous acid sources. With all the model improvements, both the process-based and observation-constrained SOA schemes can reproduce the observed mass concentrations of SOA and show spatial and seasonal consistency with each other. Our best model simulations suggest that anthropogenic SVOCs and IVOCs are the dominant source of SOA, with a contribution of over 50% in most of China, which should be considered for pollution mitigation in the future. The residential sector may be the predominant source of SVOCs and IVOCs in winter, despite large uncertainty remaining in the emissions of IVOCs from the residential sector in northern China. The industry sector is also an important source of IVOCs, especially in summer. More SVOC and IVOC measurements are needed to constrain their emissions. Besides, the results highlight the sensitivity of SOA to hydroxyl radical (OH) levels in winter in polluted environments. The addition of nitrous acid sources can lead to over 30% greater SOA mass concentrations in winter in northern China. It is important to have good OH simulations in air quality models.

Persistent arsenate–iron( iii ) oxyhydroxide–organic matter nanoaggregates observed in coal

Understanding how natural nanoaggregates of iron (Fe) and organic matter (OM), currently identified in organic rich soil or peat, interact with metals and metalloids is environmentally significant. Here, coal is also organic-rich and exemplifies anoxic sedimentary environments with Fe usually as pyrite and not oxides. Here, we analyze the local structure of Fe (6880–21 700 mg kg –1 ) and As (45–5680 mg kg –1 ) in representative Guizhou coal samples using X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (XANES and EXAFS) to illustrate how Fe(III) and As(V) are preserved in coal formed from reduced, organic-rich precursors. Arsenic XANES indicates that >80% of As exists as As(V) with <14% of As associated with sulfides in 5 Guizhou coal samples, confirming published but unexplained results. An As–Fe shell at 3.25–3.29 Å in the As EXAFS suggests that this As(V) is adsorbed on Fe(III) oxyhydroxides as evidenced by Fe EXAFS in these coal samples. Significantly, lower Fe–Fe coordination numbers (CN) of 0.6–1.1 relative to those in 2-line ferrihydrite (CN = 1.6) and goethite (CN = 2.1) suggest that these Fe(III) oxyhydroxides are likely Fe–OM nanoaggregates protected by OM encapsulation and adsorption of arsenate. Such structurally stabilized composites of As(V)–Fe(III)–OM may be more widely distributed and allow oxidized As and Fe to persist in other organic-rich, reducing environments.

Model bias in simulating major chemical components of PM 2.5 in China

High concentrations of PM 2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm) in China have caused severe visibility degradation. Accurate simulations of PM 2.5 and its chemical components are essential for evaluating the effectiveness of pollution control strategies and the health and climate impacts of air pollution. In this study, we compared the GEOS-Chem model simulations with comprehensive datasets for organic aerosol (OA), sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium in China. Model results are evaluated spatially and temporally against observations. The new OA scheme with a simplified secondary organic aerosol (SOA) parameterization significantly improves the OA simulations in polluted urban areas, highlighting the important contributions of anthropogenic SOA from semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds. The model underestimates sulfate and overestimates nitrate for most of the sites throughout the year. More significant underestimation of sulfate occurs in winter, while the overestimation of nitrate is extremely large in summer. The model is unable to capture some of the main features in the diurnal pattern of the PM 2.5 chemical components, suggesting inaccuracies in the presented processes. Potential model adjustments that may lead to a better representation of the boundary layer height, the precursor emissions, hydroxyl radical concentrations, the heterogeneous formation of sulfate and nitrate, and the wet deposition of nitric acid and nitrate have been tested in the sensitivity analysis. The results show that uncertainties in chemistry perhaps dominate the model biases. The proper implementation of heterogeneous sulfate formation and the good estimates of the concentrations of sulfur dioxide, hydroxyl radical, and aerosol liquid water are essential for the improvement of the sulfate simulation. The update of the heterogeneous uptake coefficient of nitrogen dioxide significantly reduces the modeled concentrations of nitrate. However, the large overestimation of nitrate concentrations remains in summer for all tested cases. The possible bias in the chemical production and the wet deposition of nitrate cannot fully explain the model overestimation of nitrate, suggesting issues related to the atmospheric removal of nitric acid and nitrate. A better understanding of the atmospheric nitrogen budget, in particular, the role of the photolysis of particulate nitrate, is needed for future model developments. Moreover, the results suggest that the remaining underestimation of OA in the model is associated with the underrepresented production of SOA.

New approach to the origin of the tektite in China

The tektites in China are distributed on the north part of Australia - Southeastern Asia strewfield of tektite: Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong Province and Hainan Island, and located exactly at the boundary between Zanjiang Formation and Beihai Formation. A new hypothesis is suggested: During the end of Lower Pleistocene, a comet of special components from the outer part of the Solar System approached the Earth, and then it was captured by the Earth, when it came approximately to the Roche's limet. It was crushed into countless fragments, detritus and dusts, which rotated around the Earth, probably far above the Earth's atmosphere, as a cloud ring. Under the action of crushing energy they could be in the situation of liquid-melt drop in the almost vacuum circumstances and the flow and bubble structure were formed. During their rotation the climate became anomalous and the violet Fe-Si concentration were formed on the surface of sediments. After a rather short time of rotation the unstable ring was broken and the fragments impacted on the hard ground instantaneously.
