Operando Investigation on the Role of Densification and Chemo-Mechanics on Solid-State Cathodes

All solid-state batteries are desirable for a range of energy storage applications which require high energy density. Achieving a high energy density in a solid-state battery requires the operation of an energy dense anode with a composite solid-state cathode. Pores and/or voids within a solid state cathode are ion-blocking and thus control over the concentration and distribution of pores in the initial electrode and cycled electrode is desirable. This study provides an understanding of the interplay between electrode microstructure and mechanics on active material utilization in solid state cathodes composed of NCM 811 and Li 6 PS 5 Cl. Decreasing the solid electrolyte particle size leads to greater active material-electrolyte contact and less total deformation when exposed to an external load. Composite cathodes with greater compliance can potentially decrease strain between the active material and solid electrolyte, decrease delamination events and result in higher overall active material utilization and high capacity retention.

Challenges and Roadmap for Solar-Thermal Desalination

Decarbonizing desalination systems requires combining renewable energy technologies with desalination systems. Solar thermal desalination, which combines a thermal desalination system (e.g., distillation, multistage flash, etc.) with a concentrated solar system is attractive in geographic regions with an abundance of saline water and solar energy. However, the high economic cost and low efficiency limits its adoption. This review provides an overview of the techno-economic, materials, and performance challenges that need to be overcome to realize solar-desalination. The review describes the four most prominent pathways for overcoming thermodynamic and cost limitations present in current systems. Specifically, methodologies and approaches such as direct solar evaporation structures, low-cost thermal energy storage, solar cogeneration schemes for power and desalination, and solar hybrid desalination are discussed. Furthermore, these strategies can enable solar thermal desalination technologies that are resilient to intermittent solar energy.

Ultrasparse View X-ray Computed Tomography for 4D Imaging

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a noninvasive, nondestructive approach to imaging materials, material systems, and engineered components in two and three dimensions. Acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) images requires the collection of hundreds or thousands of through-thickness X-ray radiographic images from different angles. Such 3D data acquisition strategies commonly involve suboptimal temporal sampling for in situ and operando studies (4D imaging). Herein, we introduce a sparse-view imaging approach, Tomo-NeRF, which is capable of reconstructing high-fidelity 3D images from <10 twodimensional radiographic images. Experimental 2D and 3D X-ray images were used to test the reconstruction capability in two-view, four-view, and six-view scenarios. Tomo-NeRF is capable of reconstructing 3D images with a structural similarity of 0.9971–0.9975 and a voxel-wise accuracy of 81.83–89.59% from 2D experimentally obtained images. Furthermore, the reconstruction accuracy for the experimentally obtained images is less than the synthetic structures. Experimentally obtained images demonstrate a similarity of 0.9973–0.9984 and a voxelwise accuracy of 84.31–95.77%.
