Achieving 19% efficiency in non-fused ring electron acceptor solar cells via solubility control of donor and acceptor crystallization

Non-fused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) potentially have lower synthetic costs than their fused counterparts. However, the low backbone planarity and the presence of bulky substituents adversely affect the crystallinity of NFREAs, impeding charge transport and the formation of bicontinuous morphology in organic solar cells. Here we show that a binary solvent system can individually control the crystallization and phase separation of the donor polymer (for example, D18) and the NFREA (for example, 2BTh-2F-C 2 ). We select solvents such as chloroform and o -xylene that evaporate at different temperatures and rates and have different solubility for D18. Upon evaporation of chloroform, D18 starts to assemble into fibrils. Then, the evaporation of o-xylene induces the rapid formation of a fibril network that phase segregates 2BTh-2F-C 2 into pure domains and leads to a bicontinuous morphology. In conclusion, the well-defined interpenetrating network morphology affords an efficiency of 19.02% on small-area cells and 17.28% on 1 cm 2 devices.

Molecular Precision Engineering for Efficient Binary Organic Photovoltaics through Energy Level and Fibrillar Structure Modulation

Adjusting the energy levels and fibrillar morphology is paramount to enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). In the present study, an increase in the open-circuit voltage (VOC) is facilitated through the elongation of the alkyl chain within AQx (namely AQx-8), aiming to decrease the free volume ratio (FVR). This reduction in FVR attenuates electron-phonon coupling, thereby augmenting emission efficiency and diminishing the non-radiative energy loss (ΔEnr). To further refine the energy levels and morphological characteristics, the external undecyl chain of AQx-8 is substituted with a shorter carbon chain and cyclohexane noted for its considerable steric hindrance (AQx-H). Additionally, this alteration significantly mitigates intermolecular aggregation, expands the bandgap, and elevates the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, culminating in an elevated VOC of 0.923 V in devices based on AQx-H. Morphological analysis reveals that blends based on AQx-H exhibit an enhanced multi-length-scale fibrillar structure, which is conducive to exciton dissociation and charge transport, thereby contributing to a high fill factor (FF) nearing 80%. Consequently, this study reports one of the highest binary PCEs documented, standing at 19.5% (with certification at 19.0%).

All-polymer organic solar cells with nano-to-micron hierarchical morphology and large light receiving angle

Distributed photovoltaics in living environment harvest the sunlight in different incident angles throughout the day. The development of planer solar cells with large light-receiving angle can reduce the requirements in installation form factor and is therefore urgently required. Here, thin film organic photovoltaics with nano-sized phase separation integrated in micro-sized surface topology is demonstrated as an ideal solution to proposed applications. All-polymer solar cells, by means of a newly developed sequential processing, show large magnitude hierarchical morphology with facilitated exciton-to-carrier conversion. The nano fibrilar donor-acceptor network and micron-scale optical field trapping structure in combination contributes to an efficiency of 19.06% (certified 18.59%), which is the highest value to date for all-polymer solar cells. Furthermore, the micron-sized surface topology also contributes to a large light-receiving angle. A 30% improvement of power gain is achieved for the hierarchical morphology comparing to the flat-morphology devices. These inspiring results show that all-polymer solar cell with hierarchical features are particularly suitable for the commercial applications of distributed photovoltaics due to its low installation requirement.

A Mixed PC 61 BM‐CO i 8DFIC Based Electron Transport Material for Inverted High‐performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract This study reports a blend of [6, 6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC 61 BM) and CO i 8DFIC non‐fullerene acceptor (NFA) as an electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This mixed small‐molecule ETL showed good inter‐molecule mixing, reduced intermolecular distances and decent morphology, resulting in excellent charge carrier transport properties. Morever, charge carrier extraction and transport at the perovskite/ETL interface was optimized by reducing surface traps and defects due to the passivation ability of various terminal groups from the CO i 8DFIC molecule. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.12 % was achieved by taking advantage of benefits from both molecules, showing much better performance than the invidual PC 61 BM or CO i 8DFIC (7.13% for using the NFA only). Moreover, the storage and ambient stabilities of the mixed ETL‐based PSCs increased dramatically compared to control devices.

Surface Charge and Nanoparticle Chromophore Coupling to Achieve Fast Exciton Quenching and Efficient Charge Separation in Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI) and Photothermal therapy (PTT)

Abstract An organic semiconductor nanoparticle (OSN) with surface charge strategy is proposed, which displays excellent photothermal conversion performance. The donor–acceptor hybrid organic semiconductor Y6 is selected as a photothermal chromophore into nanoparticle by self‐assembly, which affords long wavelength absorption, sub‐bandgap emission, and high photon‐to‐thermal conversion. Y6 in OSN adopts closed packing comparing to that in single crystal. The surface charge in OSN causes super‐quenching of the photon excitons, which enhances the nonradiative transition to improve photothermal effect. Lower energy level electronic states are created, which breaks up the bandgap limit and leads to long wavelength emission over 1100 nm. Photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging are applied successfully, indicating the success of the new methodology in designing photothermal conversion materials.

Design Rules of the Mixing Phase and Impacts on Device Performance in High-Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics

In nonfullerene acceptor- (NFA-) based solar cells, the exciton splitting takes place at both domain interface and donor/acceptor mixture, which brings in the state of mixing phase into focus. The energetics and morphology are key parameters dictating the charge generation, diffusion, and recombination. It is revealed that tailoringthe electronic properties of the mixing region by doping with larger-bandgap components could reduce the density of state but elevate the filling state level, leading to improved open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and reduced recombination. The monomolecular and bimolecular recombinations are shown to be intercorrelated, which show a Gaussian-like relationship with V OC and linear relationship with short-circuit current density ( J SC ) and fill factor (FF). The kinetics of hole transfer and exciton diffusion scale with J SC similarly, indicating the carrier generation in mixing region and crystalline domain are equally important. From the morphology perspective, the crystalline order could contribute to V OC improvement, and the fibrillar structure strongly affects the FF. These observations highlight the importance of the mixing region and its connection with crystalline domains and point out the design rules to optimize the mixing phase structure, which is an effective approach to further improve device performance.

The Crystalline Behavior and Device Function of Nonfullerene Acceptors in Organic Solar Cells

The current research investigates the structure features and intermolecular interactions of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) in single crystal and thin films, as well as their solar cell applications. Guiding parameters and key intermolecular forces that lead to 2D brickwork or 3D web packing are identified. The atomic modification is shown as the key to induce hydrogen bonding or π–π stacking column, which results in different crystalline packing. The molecular assembly in thin film is initiated by hydrogen bonding and completed by π–π stacking reorganization. The packing energy is seen as a guiding parameter that dictates the NFA crystalline morphology in blended thin films. The crystalline packing motif is not directly related with device efficiency. However, the crystalline morphology is the key parameter to influence exciton/carrier dynamics and device performance. In conclusion, a broader picture on the scaling behavior of organic semiconductor crystals ranging from oligoacenes to NFAs is established.

Spontaneous carrier generation and low recombination in high-efficiency non-fullerene solar cells

The current research reveals the unique photo physical properties and carrier generation mechanisms of high efficiency non-fullerene acceptor-based organic photovoltaic blends. The analysis of device performance, morphology, and photo physics reveals that the interface carrier generation cannot support the device's current output. It is seen that primary photon excitons can dissociate into charge carriers in Y6, which displays a time scale of ∼0.3 ps with polaron yields above 28% in neat and blended thin films. This characteristic in combination with a large exciton diffusion length enables high morphology tolerance in Y6-overloaded blends. The carrier generation process is also combined with recombination studies. The recombination rate quantified by flux-dependent transient absorption measurements yields less than 5% total recombination and nearly 0% geminate recombination. Furthermore, these results define the advantages of the Y6 non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) and reveal the fundamental importance of developing new NFA materials with superior photo physical properties.

The Molecular Ordering and Double-Channel Carrier Generation of Nonfullerene Photovoltaics within Multi-Length-Scale Morphology

The success of nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) solar cells lies in their unique physical properties beyond the extended absorption and suitable energy levels. The current study investigates the morphology and photophysical behavior of PBDB-T donor blending with ITIC, 4TIC, and 6TIC acceptors. Single-crystal study shows that the π–π stacking and side-chain interaction dictate molecular assembly, which can be carried to blended films, forming a multi-length-scale morphology. Spontaneous carrier generation is seen in ITIC, 4TIC, and 6TIC neat films and their blended thin films using the PBDB-T donor, providing a new avenue of zero-energy-loss carrier formation. The molecular packing associated with specific contacts and geometry is key in influencing the photophysics, as demonstrated by the charge transfer and carrier lifetime results. The 2D layer of 6TIC facilitates the exciton-to-polaron conversion, and the largest photogenerated polaron yield is obtained. Finally, the new mechanism, together with the highly efficient blending region carrier generation, has the prospect of the fundamental advantage for NFA solar cells, from molecular assembly to thin-film morphology.

Correlating Electronic Structure and Device Physics with Mixing Region Morphology in High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

The donor/acceptor interaction in non-fullerene organic photovoltaics leads to the mixing domain that dictates the morphology and electronic structure of the blended thin film. Initiative effort is paid to understand how these domain properties affect the device performances on high-efficiency PM6:Y6 blends. Different fullerenes acceptors are used to manipulate the feature of mixing domain. It is seen that a tight packing in the mixing region is critical, which could effectively enhance the hole transfer and lead to the enlarged and narrow electron density of state (DOS). As a result, short-circuit current (J SC ) and fill factor (FF) are improved. The distribution of DOS and energy levels strongly influences open-circuit voltage (V OC ). The raised filling state of electron Fermi level is seen to be key in determining device V OC . Energy disorder is found to be a key factor to energy loss, which is highly correlated with the intermolecular distance in the mixing region. A 17.53% efficiency is obtained for optimized ternary devices, which is the highest value for similar systems. The current results indicate that a delicate optimization of the mixing domain property is an effective route to improve the V OC , J SC , and FF simultaneously, which provides new guidelines for morphology control toward high-performance organic solar cells.

Unraveling the Crystallization Kinetics of 2D Perovskites with Sandwich-Type Structure for High-Performance Photovoltaics

2D perovskite solar cells with high stability and high efficiency have attracted significant attention. A systematical static and dynamic structure investigation is carried out to show the details of 2D morphology evolution. A dual additive approach is used, where the synergy between an alkali metal cation and a polar solvent leads to high-quality 2D perovskite films with sandwich-type structures and vertical phase segregation. Such novel structure can induce high-quality 2D slab growth and reduce internal and surface defects, resulting in a high device efficiency of 16.48% with enhanced continuous illumination stability and improved moisture (55-60%) and thermal (85°C) tolerances. Transient absorption spectra reveal the carrier migration from low n to high n species with different kinetics. An [PbI 6 ] 4- octagon coalescence transformation mechanism coupled with metal and organic cations wrapped is proposed. By solvent vapor annealing, a recrystallization and reorientation of the 2D perovskite slabs occurs to form an ideal structure with improved device performance and stability.
