Search for Solar Boosted Dark Matter Particles at the PandaX-4T Experiment

We present a novel constraint on light dark matter utilizing 1.54 metric ton/year of data acquired from the PandaX-4T dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. This constraint is derived through detecting electronic recoil signals resulting from the interaction with solar-enhanced dark matter flux. Low-mass dark matter particles, lighter than a few MeV / c 2 , can scatter with the thermal electrons in the Sun. Consequently, with higher kinetic energy, the boosted dark matter component becomes detectable via contact scattering with xenon electrons, resulting in a few keV energy deposition that exceeds the threshold of PandaX-4T. We calculate the expected recoil energy in PandaX-4T considering the Sun’s acceleration with heavy mediators and the detection capabilities of the xenon detector. The first experimental search results using the xenon detector yield the most stringent upper limits cross section of 3.51 × 10 − 39 cm 2 at 0.08 MeV / c 2 for a solar boosted dark matter mass ranging from 0.02 to 10 MeV / c 2 , achieving a 23-fold improvement compared with earlier experimental studies. Enhancing Solar Power Forecasting with Regularized Constrained Quantile Regression Averaging and Bootstrapping Techniques

Probabilistic solar power forecasting (SPF) plays an essential role in optimizing power-grid operations by quantifying the forecast uncertainty. To improve the accuracy and robustness of probabilistic SPF, this paper introduces the regularized constrained quantile regression averaging (rCQRA) method to combine outputs from multiple PSPF models. In addition, a bootstrapping method was used to quantify model uncertainty, providing insights into the reliability and significance of each ensemble component. To evaluate its efficacy, the proposed rCQRA method is used to integrate four PSPF methods. The resulting SPF models are trained and validated using a real-world six-year dataset from a rooftop solar plant in the USA. The performance of the proposed rCQRA method is evaluated and compared with two benchmark methods under three categories of weather conditions. It is shown that the rCQRA method has superior performance in its forecast reliability, sharpness, and accuracy.

Understanding the influence of boron in additively manufactured GammaPrint®-700 CoNi-based superalloy

Boron is commonly added to superalloys in small amounts to enhance creep resistance, but can lead to cracking at high concentrations, especially during the additive manufacturing process. Two variants of CoNi-based GammaPrint®-700 superalloy with different B contents (0.08 at% vs 0.16 at%) were printed via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) with the same printing parameters, with only the high B alloy exhibiting solidification cracking. Atom probe tomography (APT) revealed stronger segregation behaviors in the high B alloy compared to the low B alloy at both the inter-dendritic regions and grain boundaries (GBs). The segregation behavior at inter-dendritic regions was well captured with Scheil simulation and can correlate with the existing cracking susceptibility index (CSI) on cracking tendencies, although high angle GBs are where cracking occurs according to electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements. Additionally, the extent of GB segregation was compared between the high B and low B alloy. Higher B additions led to significantly more GB B segregation in the high B alloy compared to the low B alloy. Further, for the high B alloy, the cracked region of one GB exhibited higher levels of B compared to the uncracked region of the same GB. However, much higher B contents were also found in two other uncracked GBs in the high B alloy, which demonstrates that higher GB B concentrations are not fully responsible for the cracking. A much larger variance in GB B segregation content was found in the high B alloy compared to the low B alloy. These phenomena were explained with a solidification model with the GB segregation content expressed explicitly by a modified Langmuir-McLean equation. This model linked the GB segregation content with solidification undercooling, which can be used as quantitative cracking criteria for future builds.

Modified Eigen-Decomposition-based Interval Analysis (MEDIA) for Power System Dynamic State Estimation

The Bayesian approach has been used for the dynamic state estimation (DSE) of a power system. However, due to the complexity of noise resources, it is difficult to quantify measurement and process noise using probability density functions (PDFs). To overcome the difficulty, the authors of this paper propose a modified eigen-decomposition-based interval analysis (MEDIA) method, which employs bounds instead of PDFs to quantify the noise, and uses the eigen decomposition method to reduce the negative impact of the overestimation problem. Using the simulation data generated from IEEE 16-machine and IEEE 10-machine systems, it is shown that the proposed MEDIA method can estimate the hard boundaries of dynamic states in real time. Furthermore, comparison with the forward-backward propagation method and the extended set-membership filter also shows that the proposed MEDIA method performs better by providing narrower boundaries in the DSE.

Development of an Advanced Computational Model for OMCVD of Indium Nitride

An advanced computational model is being developed to predict the formation of indium nitride (InN) film from the reaction of trimethylindium (In(CH3)3) with ammonia (NH3). The components are introduced into the reactor in the gas phase within a background of molecular nitrogen (N2). Organometallic chemical vapor deposition occurs on a heated sapphire surface. The model simulates heat and mass transport with gas and surface chemistry under steady state and pulsed conditions. The development and validation of an accurate model for the interactions between the diffusion of gas phase species and surface kinetics is essential to enable the regulation of the process in order to produce a low defect material. The validation of the model will be performed in concert with a NASA-North Carolina State University project.
