Modified-Signed-Digit Optical Computing Using Fan-Out

Experimental optical computing system containing optical fan-out elements implements modified signed-digit (MSD) arithmetic and logic. In comparison with previous optical implementations of MSD arithmetic, this one characterized by larger throughput, greater flexibility, and simpler optics.

Optical Interconnection Via Computer-Generated Holograms

Method of free-space optical interconnection developed for data-processing applications like parallel optical computing, neural-network computing, and switching in optical communication networks. In method, multiple optical connections between multiple sources of light in one array and multiple photodetectors in another array made via computer-generated holograms in electrically addressed spatial light modulators (ESLMs). Offers potential advantages of massive parallelism, high space-bandwidth product, high time-bandwidth product, low power consumption, low cross talk, and low time skew. Also offers advantage of programmability with flexibility of reconfiguration, including variation of strengths of optical connections in real time.

Reconfigurable optical interconnections via dynamic computer-generated holograms

A system is proposed for optically providing one-to-many irregular interconnections, and strength-adjustable many-to-many irregular interconnections which may be provided with strengths (weights) w(sub ij) using multiple laser beams which address multiple holograms and means for combining the beams modified by the holograms to form multiple interconnections, such as a cross-bar switching network. The optical means for interconnection is based on entering a series of complex computer-generated holograms on an electrically addressed spatial light modulator for real-time reconfigurations, thus providing flexibility for interconnection networks for largescale practical use. By employing multiple sources and holograms, the number of interconnection patterns achieved is increased greatly.

Dynamic two-dimensional beam-pattern steering technique

A dynamic two-dimensional laser-beam-pattern steering technique using photorefractive holograms in conjunction with electrically addressed spatial light modulators is proposed and investigated. The experimental results demonstrate the dynamic steering of random combinations of basis beam patterns. The proposed method has the advantages of random beam-pattern combination, good beam intensity uniformity, and higher diffraction efficiency compared with conventional methods.

Dynamic photorefractive self-amplified angular-multiplex 2-D optical beam-array generation

A real-time 2-D angular-multiplex beam-array holographic storage and reconstruction technique using electrically-addressed spatial light modulators(E-SLM's) and photorefractive crystals is described. Using a liquid crystal television (LCTV) spatial light modulator (SLM) for beam steering and lithium niobate photorefractive crystal for holographic recording, experimental results of generating large and complicated arrays of laser beams with high diffraction efficiency and good uniformity are presented.

Modified-signed-digit optical computing by using fan-out elements

We present a novel three-step modified-signed-digit optical computing system based on the disrete correlation of space-coded input matrices that are multiply-imaged by using optical fan-out elements. The advantages of our method over other approaches include a larger throughput, more flexible operation, and an easier optical implementation.
