Overview of the recent experimental research on the J-TEXT tokamak

The J-TEXT capability is enhanced compared to two years ago with several upgrades of its diagnostics and the increase of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) power to 1 MW. With the application of electron cyclotron wave (ECW), the ECW assisted plasma startup is achieved; the tearing mode is suppressed; the toroidal injection of 300 kW ECW drives around 24 kA current; fast electrons are generated with toroidal injected ECW and the runaway current conversion efficiency increases with ECRH power. The mode coupling between 2/1 and 3/1 modes are extensively studied. The coupled 2/1 and 3/1 modes usually lead to major disruption. Their coupling can be either suppressed or avoided by external resonant magnetic perturbation fields and hence avoids the major disruption. It is also found that the 2/1 threshold of external field is significantly reduced by a pre-excited 3/1 mode, which can be either a locked island or an external kink mode. The disruption control is studied by developing prediction methods capable of cross tokamak application and by new mitigation methods, such as the biased electrode or electromagnetic pellet injector. The high-density operation and related disruptions are studied from various aspects. Approaching the density limit, the collapse of the edge shear layer is observed and such collapse can be prevented by applying edge biasing, leading to an increased density limit. The density limit is also observed to increase, if the plasma is operated in the poloidal divertor configuration or the plasma purity is increased by increasing the pre-filled gas pressure or ECRH power during the start-up phase.

Modeling of plasma beta effects on the island divertor transport in the standard configuration of W7-X

The influence of plasma beta effects on the edge plasma transport in the Wendelstein 7-X standard configuration is studied systematically by using EMC3-EIRENE combined with a 3D equilibrium code named HINT. The magnetic topology changes induced by plasma beta effects are significantly reflected in plasma transport behaviors and heat flux patterns on divertor targets. After validating the modeling strategy by comparisons with experimental data, the extended simulations for high performance plasmas show that the threshold separatrix density for accessing the power detachment is reduced in higher beta plasmas. Compared with the vacuum field case, the impurity radiation distributions with finite beta effects are modified in the magnetic island region. The divertor heat flux is distributed more evenly along the toroidal direction on the strike line at the vertical target. The strike line on the horizontal target moves towards the pumping gap with an increase in the plasma beta. In addition, the different pressure profiles with the same central beta also result in a modified heat flux pattern on the divertor targets.

Accelerating the magnetic island by the modulated resonant magnetic perturbation for the disruption avoidance on J-TEXT

We report the acceleration of the magnetic island rotation by the modulated resonant magnetic perturbation (MRMP) has been studied in J-TEXT tokamak experiments. After applying the MRMP, the phase difference between the tearing mode (TM) and MRMP, Δξ, oscillated near the effective phase difference, Δξ eff , which was defined as the time averaged value of Δξ. When the Δξ eff was closed to the—π/2, the MRMP only contributed an accelerating torque on the TM. As the result, the TM rotation frequency was increased by a few kilohertz for the optimized relative phase by small RMPs of the order of 10 -5 of the toroidal field and the locked mode induced disruption was avoided. It is found that the TM rotation could be increased to a higher frequency by applying a stronger MRMP. There is a negative sinusoidal relationship between TM frequency and Δξ eff .

Waste to worth: A high-temperature water-gas shift magnetite catalyst with encapsulated core-shell structure from coal fly ash

In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis of magnetite-based, encapsulated catalyst with a core-shell structure from coal fly ash, an industrial solid waste, and its application to industrially important high temperature water-gas shift reaction (HT-WGSR). The catalyst precursor was first synthesized through a leaching-precipitation-hydrothermal process, leading to the formation of a nanosheet-like hematite precursor consisting of Fe 3+ as primary element and minor cations including Al 3+ , Mg 2+ and other cations (e.g. Ca 2+ and Ti 4+ ). During the WGSR, the nanosheets broke into smaller particles with a core of magnetite with a diameter of ~20 nm, whereas the inherent impurity elements were activated and migrated to the outer surface forming a shell with a thickness of ~4 nm. Due to the protection of shell, the as-synthesized catalyst exhibited improved activity, thermal stability and long-term durability for HT-WGSR at 400 °C and 450 °C. Compared to the pure hematite, this catalyst exhibited much higher activity and stability, i.e., increased CO conversion and decreased deactivation rate constant, by a factor of four and three, respectively. Additionally, through a bottom-up reverse synthesis, we have confirmed that Al 3+ functioned as a textual promoter enhancing the interfacial area of the catalyst. On the other hand, the presence of minor impurity elements, in particular 2.58 wt% Mg 2+ and 0.18 wt% Ti 4+ , were found to increase the basicity, and promote the adsorption rate of CO, the redox of catalysts, and the alteration of the reaction mechanism from regenerative to associative with the formation of a strong intermediate formate. Finally, this study not only opens a new direction on the valorization of solid waste into high-value catalysts, promoting the sustainability of solid waste management, but also provides an alternative, cost-effective and scalable approach for the design and fine-tuning of encapsulated catalysts.

Multirobot Collaborative Pursuit Target Robot by Improved MADDPG

Policy formulation is one of the main problems in multirobot systems, especially in multirobot pursuit-evasion scenarios, where both sparse rewards and random environment changes bring great difficulties to find better strategy. Existing multirobot decision-making methods mostly use environmental rewards to promote robots to complete the target task that cannot achieve good results. This paper proposes a multirobot pursuit method based on improved multiagent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG), which solves the problem of sparse rewards in multirobot pursuit-evasion scenarios by combining the intrinsic reward and the external environment. The state similarity module based on the threshold constraint is as a part of the intrinsic reward signal output by the intrinsic curiosity module, which is used to balance overexploration and insufficient exploration, so that the agent can use the intrinsic reward more effectively to learn better strategies. The simulation experiment results show that the proposed method can improve the reward value of robots and the success rate of the pursuit task significantly. The intuitive change is obviously reflected in the real-time distance between the pursuer and the escapee, the pursuer using the improved algorithm for training can get closer to the escapee more quickly, and the average following distance also decreases.
