First observation of the decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 183 Hg and B(M 2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2 + isomeric state in 183 Hg was observed for the first time following the a decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 187 Pb produced in the 142 Nd( 50 Cr, 2p3n) reaction. Using $\alpha - \gamma$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) μs. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy M2 transition to the known 9/2 - member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2 - [514] band, followed by a 105-keV M1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(M2) >= 0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2 + isomer in 181 Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(M2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

Propane Dehydrogenation on Single-Site [PtZn4] Intermetallic Catalysts

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a commercial propylene production technology that has received much attention, but high reaction temperature results in decrease of propylene selectivity and catalyst stability. This paper describes a single-site [PtZn 4 ] catalyst by assembling atomically ordered intermetallic alloy (IMA) as a selective and ultrastable PDH catalyst. The catalyst enables more than 95% propylene selectivity from 520 to 620 oC. No obvious deactivation is observed within 160-hours test, superior to PtSn/Al 2 O 3 and state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts. Additionally, based on in situ X-ray absorption fine-structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the surface [PtZn 4 ] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as the key active site structures, wherein the geometry-isolated and electron-rich Pt1 site in [PtZn 4 ] ensembles readily promotes the first and second C–H cleavage of propane, but inhibits further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene. This significantly improves the selectivity and stability by prohibiting coke side reactions.

Compensatory Guaiacyl Lignin Biosynthesis at the Expense of Syringyl Lignin in 4CL1 -Knockout Poplar -Knockout Poplar

The lignin biosynthetic pathway is highly conserved in angiosperms, yet pathway manipulations give rise to a variety of taxon-specific outcomes. Knockout of lignin-associated 4-coumarate:CoA ligases (4CLs) in herbaceous species mainly reduces guaiacyl (G) lignin and enhances cell wall saccharification. In this work we show that CRISPR-knockout of 4CL1 in poplar (Populus tremula x alba) preferentially reduced syringyl (S) lignin, with negligible effects on biomass recalcitrance. Concordant with reduced S-lignin was downregulation of ferulate 5-hydroxylases (F5Hs). Lignification was largely sustained by 4CL5, a low-affinity paralog of 4CL1 typically with only minor xylem expression or activity. Levels of caffeate, the preferred substrate of 4CL5, increased in line with significant upregulation of caffeoyl shikimate esterase1. Upregulation of caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase1 and downregulation of F5Hs are consistent with preferential funneling of 4CL5 products toward G-lignin biosynthesis at the expense of S-lignin. Thus, transcriptional and metabolic adaptations to 4CL1-knockout appear to have enabled 4CL5 catalysis at a level sufficient to sustain lignification. Finally, genes involved in sulfur assimilation, the glutathione-ascorbate cycle, and various antioxidant systems were upregulated in the mutants, suggesting cascading responses to perturbed thioesterification in lignin biosynthesis.
