The Quick Rise and Fall of LK-99 as a Room Temperature Superconductor [Slides]

A swift determination of superconductivity vs non-superconductivity of LK-99 demonstrates the importance of reproducibility in science. This has benefited from 4 decades study of high-temperature cuprate mechanism. Holy grail of room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor remains to be pursued. Caution is needed about DFT calculations. Crucial old experimental data should be referenced. With the existing amount of experimentally discovered superconductors, could data science make a stride?

Asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions in MoSe 2 /CrBr 3 van der Waals heterostructures

Magnetic proximity interactions between atomically thin semiconductors and two-dimensional magnets provide a means to manipulate spin and valley degrees of freedom in non-magnetic monolayers, without using applied magnetic fields. In such van der Waals heterostructures, magnetic proximity interactions originate in the nanometre-scale coupling between spin-dependent electronic wavefunctions in the two materials, and typically their overall effect is regarded as an effective magnetic field acting on the semiconductor monolayer. Here we demonstrate that magnetic proximity interactions in van der Waals heterostructures can in fact be markedly asymmetric. Valley-resolved reflection spectroscopy of MoSe2/CrBr3 van der Waals structures reveals strikingly different energy shifts in the K and K' valleys of the MoSe2 due to ferromagnetism in the CrBr3 layer. Density functional calculations indicate that valley-asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions depend sensitively on the spin-dependent hybridization of overlapping bands and as such are likely a general feature of hybrid van der Waals structures. Here, these studies suggest routes to control specific spin and valley states in monolayer semiconductors.

Colossal piezoresistance in narrow-gap Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Piezoresistance, the change of the electrical resistance (R) of a material in response to an applied mechanical stress (σ), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. In this study, we report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4 GPa leads to a resistivity drop of >99.95%, which results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of 5000×10 –11 Pa –1 . Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a route to multifunctional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field.

Photocurrent-driven transient symmetry breaking in the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry changes a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurrent generation. Using second harmonic generation spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of symmetry changes, we observe an ultrafast breaking of time-reversal and spatial symmetries following femtosecond optical excitation in the prototypical type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs. Here, our results show that optically driven photocurrents can be tailored to explicitly break electronic symmetry in a generic fashion, opening up the possibility of driving phase transitions between symmetry-protected states on ultrafast timescales.

Electronic Correlation and Topology in f-Electron Quantum Matter [Slides]

After introducing quantum matter, topological insulators, and interacting topological systems, the presentation focuses on f-electron quantum matter including the electronic structure and topological classification of PuB 4 , the electronic structure of Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 /Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 family of heavy fermion systems, and the electronic structure of CeBi. In summary, f-electron quantum materials provides a powerful material platform to explore exotic states from the interplay of electronic correlation and topology
