Donor End-Capped Alkyl Chain Length Dependent Non-Radiative Energy Loss in All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

A critical bottleneck for further efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs) is to minimize the non-radiative energy loss (eΔV nr ) while maximizing the charge generation. With the development of highly emissive low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptors, the design of high-performance donors becomes critical to enable the blend with the electroluminescence quantum efficiency to approach or surpass the pristine acceptor. Herein, by shortening the end-capped alkyl chains of the small-molecular donors from hexyl (MPhS-C6) to ethyl (MPhS-C2), the material obtained aggregation that was insensitive to thermal annealing (TA) along with condensed packing simultaneously. The former leads to small phase separation and suppressed upshifts of the highest occupied molecular orbital energy level during TA, and the latter facilitates its efficient charge-transport at aggregation-less packing. Hence, the ΔV nr decreases from 0.242 to 0.182 V, from MPhS-C6 to MPhS-C2 based OSCs. An excellent PCE of 17.11% is obtained by 1,8-diiodoctane addition due to almost unchanged high J sc (26.6 mA cm –2 ) and V oc (0.888 V) with improved fill factor, which is the record efficiency with the smallest energy loss (0.497 eV) and ΔV nr (0.192 V) in all-small-molecule OSCs. Finally, these results emphasize the potential material design direction of obtaining concurrent TA-insensitive aggregation and condensed packing to maximize the device performances with a super low ΔV nr .

Kinetic processes of phase separation and aggregation behaviors in slot-die processed high efficiency Y6-based organic solar cells

Morphological optimization has proved to be one crucial factor contributing to the 19% efficiency of Y6-based organic solar cells (OSCs). Although the relationship between component miscibility and film morphology has been established, it has not been clarified how the film formation processes proceed, especially for methods compatible with large-area fabrication, i.e. slot-die coating, which restricts the further optimization of the morphology. Herein, we comprehensively investigate the effect of miscibility and the film-formation kinetic process on film morphology during processing with different solvents. A highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.38% can be obtained in a D18:Y6 device processed with slot-die coating in an open-air environment. However, due to their relatively poor miscibility, incorporating a trace amount of chlorobenzene (CB) into CF can sufficiently promote Y6 aggregation, leading to increased phase separation and thus the average PCE drops to 15.16%. In contrast, a PM6:Y6 blend shows insensitive changes in the kinetic process as well as the final morphology, and thus in the comparable PCEs when cast with different solvents, which is ascribed to their relatively good miscibility. As a result, this work provides scientific guidelines for device optimization by combining the intermediate gap from miscibility to kinetic process and their impact on final morphology.

Efficient and mechanically-robust organic solar cells based on vertical stratification modulation through sequential blade-coating

Mechanically durable organic solar cells (OSCs) with high efficiency are deemed as the ideal candidate for the power source of the next generation wearable electronic devices. However, the brittle nature of small molecules in most high-efficiency OSCs consisting of polymer and small molecule encourages easy formation of cracks in the photoactive film under deformation. Here, the vertical composition distribution of the active layer has been well optimized through sequential blade coating to realize highly deformable while efficient OSC. The optimized morphology exhibits distinct donor-rich and homogenous region distributed along the vertical direction in the bulk. The donor-rich region provides sufficient chain entanglements and strong interfaces beneficial for mechanical robustness of film, while homogeneously mixed region offers continuous interpenetrating network to maintain high device through-put, resulting in superior efficiency of 14.4% with high crack-onset strain (COS) of 30.5%. This efficiency versus COS combination is much higher than the best combination reported in all polymer systems (COS of 15.9% and efficiency of 11.1%). To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest COS value achieved in polymer-small molecule systems. As a result, the rational control over vertical stratification demonstrated here would guide researchers in the development of innovative wearable electronics.

Highly efficient organic solar cells with superior deformability enabled by diluting the small molecule acceptor content

Developing efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) with strong mechanical deformability is important to be addressed to ensure their operational reliability in wearable electronics. However, it is challenging to achieve mechanically robust polymer/small molecule OSCs with an efficiency over 17% due to the abundant brittle donor/acceptor (D/A) interface. Decreasing the small molecule content can reduce the brittle D/A interface area to enhance deformability, but it may also cause discontinuous electron-conducting regions and thus deteriorate photovoltaic performance. Here, we incorporate a polymer donor (D18) into a binary PTQ10cm-BTP-PhC6 system at a constant PTQ10:m-BTP-PhC6 ratio of 1 : 1.2 to minimize the D/A interfacial area and modulate phase separation, and subsequently fabricate mechanically reliable OSCs with high efficiency. The large incorporation of D18 molecules increases the crystallinity of m-BTP-PhC6 molecules because of the poor interaction between D18 and the two host materials, affording sufficient pathways for efficient charge percolation at a large D/A ratio. More importantly, highly aggregated m-BTP-PhC6 molecules help to minimize the D/A interfacial area, enabling ternary films with better deformability than their binary counterparts. As a result, ternary OSCs with a large D/A ratio of 1.5 : 1.2 exhibit a high efficiency of 17.3% with a crack-onset strain (COS) of 8.8%, which significantly outperforms their binary counterparts with an efficiency of 13.8% and a COS of 4.4%. Finally, diluting the content of small molecules and controlling intermolecular interaction through the introduction of the second polymer donor represents a promising strategy to fabricate efficient OSCs with superior deformability.
