1T'-transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers stabilized on 4H-Au nanowires for ultrasensitive SERS detection

Unconventional 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have aroused tremendous research interest due to their unique phase-dependent physicochemical properties and applications. However, due to the metastable nature of 1T'-TMDs, the controlled synthesis of 1T'-TMD monolayers (MLs) with high phase purity and stability still remains a challenge. Here we report that 4H-Au nanowires (NWs), when used as templates, can induce the quasi-epitaxial growth of high-phase-purity and stable 1T'-TMD MLs, including WS 2 , WSe 2 , MoS 2 and MoSe 2 , via a facile and rapid wet-chemical method. The as-synthesized 4H-Au@1T'-TMD core–shell NWs can be used for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. For instance, the 4H-Au@1T'-WS 2 NWs have achieved attomole-level SERS detections of Rhodamine 6G and a variety of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike proteins. Finally, this work provides insights into the preparation of high-phase-purity and stable 1T'-TMD MLs on metal substrates or templates, showing great potential in various promising applications.

Epitaxial growth of highly symmetrical branched noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures with efficient plasmon-induced hot-electron transfer

Epitaxial growth is one of the most commonly used strategies to precisely tailor heterostructures with well-defined compositions, morphologies, crystal phases, and interfaces for various applications. However, as epitaxial growth requires a small interfacial lattice mismatch between the components, it remains a challenge for the epitaxial synthesis of heterostructures constructed by materials with large lattice mismatch and/or different chemical bonding, especially the noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures. Here, we develop a noble metal-seeded epitaxial growth strategy to prepare highly symmetrical noble metal-semiconductor branched heterostructures with desired spatial configurations, i.e., twenty CdS (or CdSe) nanorods epitaxially grown on twenty exposed (111) facets of Ag icosahedral nanocrystal, albeit a large lattice mismatch (more than 40%). Importantly, a high quantum yield (QY) of plasmon-induced hot-electron transferred from Ag to CdS was observed in epitaxial Ag-CdS icosapods (18.1%). This work demonstrates that epitaxial growth can be achieved in heterostructures composed of materials with large lattice mismatches. The constructed epitaxial noble metal-semiconductor interfaces could be an ideal platform for investigating the role of interfaces in various physicochemical processes.

Dispersion Caused by the Penetration Effect in X-ray Compressors

Chirped X-ray pulse compression is a promising approach for generating ultra-short X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) pulses. The design of X-ray pulse compressors requires the careful control of group delay dispersion (GDD), which plays a critical role in achieving optimal compression. However, the penetration dispersion of crystals and multilayers can induce an extra GDD, which may result in over-compression or under-compression. In this study, we investigate the penetration dispersion of crystals and multilayers theoretically and numerically. Our results indicate that the extra GDD induced by the penetration effect increases as the bandwidth of the rocking curve decreases. Moreover, the extra GDD is nonlinear and can be mitigated by optimizing the configuration of X-ray pulse compressors. This work provides insights into the dispersion compensation and configuration optimization of X-ray pulse compressors, which are essential for generating ultra-short XFEL pulses.

Non-bonding interaction of dual atom catalysts for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Here, we demonstrate the design of graphene-supported dual atom catalysts (DACs) for the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), by utilizing the non-bonding interaction of counterpart metals (M) that synergistically tune the electronic properties and catalytic activity of the Fe active site in FeMN 6 -DAC and FeMN 8 -DAC systems, where M stands for Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. More specifically, for Fe-M distances below 15Å, the non-bonding interaction is significant, making the system act as the DAC. We predicted that FeNiN 6 -DAC and FeNiN 8 -DAC exhibit a low ORR overpotential (η ORR ) of 0.28 V and 0.47 V, respectively, which are at the summits of volcano plots. This low η ORR originates from the high Bader charge transfer coupled with high spin density at the Fe site in both the FeNiN 6 -DAC and FeNiN 8 -DAC systems, which weakens the adsorption of OH* intermediate while enhancing its desorption to H 2 O. Guided by these density functional theory (DFT) computational results, we synthesized FeCoN 8 -DAC and FeNiN 8 -DAC along with N-doped graphene and confirmed their structures with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and electron spin resonance (ESR). We verify experimentally the catalytic activities and find that FeNiN 8 -DAC has the low experimental overpotential of 0.39 V with a Tafel slope of 47 mVdec -1 . Based on these results, we propose a DFT-guided strategy to tune the charge transfer and spin population of the active site toward designing DACs for electrochemical ORR.

Electrolyte formulations for electrochemical cells containing a silicon electrode

Additives to electrolytes that enable the formation of comparatively more robust SEI films on silicon anodes. The SEI films in these embodiments are seen to be more robust in part because the batteries containing these materials have higher coulombic efficiency and longer cycle life than comparable batteries without such additives.
