A butterfly-shaped acceptor with rigid skeleton and unique assembly enables both efficient organic photovoltaics and high-speed organic photodetectors

ABSTRACT It remains challenging to design efficient bifunctional semiconductor materials in organic photovoltaic and photodetector devices. Here, we report a butterfly-shaped molecule, named WD-6, which exhibits low energy disorder and small reorganization energy due to its enhanced molecular rigidity and unique assembly with strong intermolecular interaction. The binary photovoltaic device based on PM6:WD-6 achieved an efficiency of 18.41%. Notably, an efficiency of 19.42% was achieved for the ternary device based on PM6:BTP-eC9:WD-6. Moreover, the photodetection device based on WD-6 demonstrated an ultrafast response speed (205 ns response time at λ of 820 nm) and a high cutoff frequency of −3 dB (2.45 MHz), surpassing the values of most commercial Si photodiodes. Based on these findings, we showcased an application of the WD-6-based photodetection device in high-speed optical communication. These results offer valuable insights into the design of organic semiconductor materials capable of simultaneously exhibiting high photovoltaic and photodetective performance.

Phosphonate-based iron complex for a cost-effective and long cycling aqueous iron redox flow battery

Abstract A promising metal-organic complex, iron (Fe)-NTMPA 2 , consisting of Fe(III) chloride and nitrilotri-(methylphosphonic acid) (NTMPA), is designed for use in aqueous iron redox flow batteries. A full-cell testing, where a concentrated Fe-NTMPA 2 anolyte (0.67 M) is paired with a Fe-CN catholyte, demonstrates exceptional cycling stability over 1000 charge/discharge cycles, and noteworthy performances, including 96% capacity utilization, a minimal capacity fade rate of 0.0013% per cycle (1.3% over 1,000 cycles), high Coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency near 100% and 87%, respectively, all achieved under a current density of 20 mA·cm - ². Furthermore, density functional theory unveils two potential coordination structures for Fe-NTMPA 2 complexes, improving the understanding between the ligand coordination environment and electron transfer kinetics. When paired with a high redox potential Fe-Dcbpy/CN catholyte, 2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-dicarboxylic (Dcbpy) acid and cyanide (CN) ligands, Fe-NTMPA 2 demonstrates a notably elevated cell voltage of 1 V, enabling a practical energy density of up to 9 Wh/L.

Lipid vesicles induced ordered nanoassemblies of Janus nanoparticles

Since many advanced applications require specific assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs), considerable efforts have been made to fabricate nanoassemblies with specific geometries. Although nanoassemblies can be fabricated through top-down approaches, recent advances show that intricate nanoassemblies can also be obtained through self-assembly, mediated for example by DNA strands. Here, we show, through extensive molecular dynamics simulations, that highly ordered self-assemblies of NPs can be mediated by their adhesion to lipid vesicles (LVs). Specifically, Janus NPs are considered so that the amount by which they are wrapped by the LV is controlled. The specific geometry of the nanoassembly is the result of effective curvature-mediated repulsion between the NPs and the number of NPs adhering to the LV. Further, the NPs are arranged on the LV into polyhedra which satisfy the upper limit of Euler's polyhedral formula, including several deltahedra and three Platonic solids, corresponding to the tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron.

Membrane-mediated dimerization of spherocylindrical nanoparticles

Here we present a numerical investigation of the modes of adhesion and endocytosis of two spherocylindrical nanoparticles (SCNPs) on planar and tensionless lipid membranes, using systematic molecular dynamics simulations of an implicit-solvent model, with varying values of the SCNPs' adhesion strength and dimensions. We found that at weak values of the adhesion energy per unit of area, ξ, the SCNPs are monomeric and adhere to the membrane in the parallel mode. As ξ is slightly increased, the SCNPs dimerize into wedged dimers, with an obtuse angle between their major axes that decreases with increasing ξ. However, as ξ is further increased, we found that the final adhesion state of the two SCNPs is strongly affected by the initial distance, d 0 , between their centers of mass, upon their adhesion. Namely, the SCNPs dimerize into wedged dimers, with an acute angle between their major axes, if d 0 is relatively small. However, for relatively high d 0 , they adhere individually to the membrane in the monomeric normal mode. For even higher values of ξ and small values of d 0 , the SCNPs cluster into tubular dimers. However, they remain monomeric if d 0 is high. Finally, the SCNPs endocytose either as a tubular dimer, if d 0 is low or as monomers for large d 0 , with the onset value of ξ of dimeric endocytosis being lower than that of monomeric endocytosis. Dimeric endocytosis requires that the SCNPs adhere simultaneously at nearby locations.

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10 -1 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor–acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

Symmetry-Breaking Design of an Organic Iron Complex Catholyte for a Long Cyclability Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery

The limited availability of a high-performance catholyte has hindered development of aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFB) that are environmentally benign, have tunable structures, and are safer than their traditional transition metal ion-based counterparts for large-scale energy storage. In this paper, a symmetry-breaking design of iron complexes with 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic (Dcbpy) acid and cyanide ligands is described. By introducing two ligands to the metal center, the complex compounds (M4[FeII(Dcbpy)2(CN)2], M = Na, K) exhibited 4.2 times higher solubility (1.22 M, 33 Ah/L) and a 50% increase in potential compared with the widely used ferrocyanide. The symmetry-breaking, iron complex catholyte-based AORFBs were demonstrated at a concentration near the solubility limit (1.02 M Na4[FeII(Dcbpy)2(CN)2]) with a 1:1 catholyte:anolyte electron ratio. The AORFBs achieved a cell voltage of 1.2 V and a demonstrated energy density of 12.5 Wh/L. This symmetry-breaking design paves the way for development of metal complexes for high-energy-density AORFBs.

High yield production of ultrathin fibroid semiconducting nanowire of Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8

Immediately after the demonstration of the high-quality electronic properties in various two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals fabricated with mechanical exfoliation, many methods have been reported to explore and control large scale fabrications. Comparing with recent advancements in fabricating 2D atomic layered crystals, large scale production of one dimensional (1D) nanowires with thickness approaching molecular or atomic level still remains stagnant. Here, we demonstrate the high yield production of a 1D vdW material, semiconducting Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8 nanowires, by means of liquid-phase exfoliation. The thinnest nanowire we have readily achieved is around 1 nm, corresponding to a bundle of one or two molecular ribbons. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and transport measurements reveal the as-fabricated Ta 2 Pd 3 Se 8 nanowires exhibit unexpected high crystallinity and chemical stability. Our low-frequency Raman spectroscopy reveals clear evidence of the existing of weak inter-ribbon bindings. The fabricated nanowire transistors exhibit high switching performance and promising applications for photodetectors.

Study of Stable Cathodes and Electrolytes for High Specific Density Lithium-Air Battery

Future NASA missions require high specific energy battery technologies, greater than 400 Wh/kg. Current NASA missions are using "state-of-the-art" (SOA) Li-ion batteries (LIB), which consist of a metal oxide cathode, a graphite anode and an organic electrolyte. NASA Glenn Research Center is currently studying the physical and electrochemical properties of the anode-electrolyte interface for ionic liquid based Li-air batteries. The voltage-time profiles for Pyr13FSI and Pyr14TFSI ionic liquids electrolytes studies on symmetric cells show low over-potentials and no dendritic lithium morphology. Cyclic voltammetry measurements indicate that these ionic liquids have a wide electrochemical window. As a continuation of this work, sp2 carbon cathode and these low flammability electrolytes were paired and the physical and electrochemical properties were studied in a Li-air battery system under an oxygen environment.
