H Infinity Control of Magnetic Bearings to Ensure Both System and External Periodic Disturbance Robustness

Both self-excited and forced disturbances often lead to severe rotor vibrations in a magnetic bearing systems with long slender shafts. This problem has been studied using the H-infinity method, and stability with good robustness can be achieved for the linearized model of a magnetic bearing when small transient disturbances are applied. In this paper, the H-infinity control method for self-excited and forced disturbances is first reviewed. It is then applied to the control of a magnetic bearing rotor system. In modelling the system, the shaft is first discretized into 18 finite elements and then three levels of condensation are applied. This leads to a system with three masses and three compliant elements which can be described by six state variable coordinates. Simulation of the resultant system design has been performed at speeds up to 10,000 rpm. Disturbances in terms of different initial displacements, initial impulses, and external periodic inputs have been imposed. The simulation results show that good stability can be achieved under these different transient disturbances using the proposed controller while at the same time reducing the sensitivity to external periodic disturbances.

Nonlinear Control of Large Disturbances in Magnetic Bearing Systems

In this paper, the nonlinear operation of magnetic bearing control methods is reviewed. For large disturbances, the effects of displacement constraints and power amplifier current and di/dt limits on bearing control system performance are analyzed. The operation of magnetic bearings exhibiting self-excited large scale oscillations have been studied both experimentally and by simulation. The simulation of the bearing system has been extended to include the effects of eddy currents in the actuators, so as to improve the accuracy of the simulation results. The results of these experiments and simulations are compared, and some useful conclusions are drawn for improving bearing system robustness.

Modelling and design for PM/EM magnetic bearings

A mathematical model of a permanent magnet/electromagnet (PM/EM) radially active bearing is presented. The bearing is represented by both a reluctance model and a stiffness model. The reluctance model analyzes the magnetic circuit of the PM/EM bearings. By combining the two models, the performance of the bearing can be predicted given geometric dimensions, permanent magnet strength, and the parameters of the EM coils. The overall bearing design including the PM and EM design is subject to the performance requirement and physical constraints. A study of these requirements and constraints is discussed. The PM design is based on the required magnetic flux for proper geometric dimensions and magnet strength. The EM design is based on the stability and force slew rate consideration, and dictates the number of turns for the EM coils and the voltage and current of the power amplifier. An overall PM/EM bearing design methodology is proposed and a case study is also demonstrated.

Final prototype of magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage system

A prototype of a 500 Wh magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage system was designed, built, and tested. The authors present the work done and include the following: (1) a final design of the magnetic bearing, control system, and motor/generator, (2) construction of a prototype system consisting of the magnetic bearing stack, flywheel, motor, container, and display module, and (3) experimental results for the magnetic bearings, motor, and the entire system. The successful completion of the prototype system has achieved: (1) manufacture of tight tolerance bearings, (2) stability and spin above the first critical frequency, (3) use of inside sensors to eliminate runout problems, and (4) integration of the motor and magnetic bearings.

Improved operation of magnetic bearings for flywheel energy storage system

Analysis and operation of prototype 500-Wh flywheel at low speeds have shown that many factors affect the correct functioning of the magnetic bearings. An examination is made of a number of these, including magnetic bearing control system nonlinearities and displacement transducer positioning, and their effects upon the successful operation of the suspension system. It is observed that the bearing control system is extremely sensitive to actuator parameters such as coil inductance. As a consequence of the analysis of bearing relaxation oscillations, the bearing actuator design methodology which has previously been used, where coil parameter selection is based upon static considerations, has been revised. Displacement transducer sensors which overcome the collocation problem are discussed.

A high efficiency motor/generator for magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage system

The authors discuss the theory and design of a brushless direct current motor for use in a flywheel energy storage system. The motor design is optimized for a nominal 4.5-in outside diameter operating within a speed range of 33,000-66,000 revolutions per minute with a 140-V maximum supply voltage. The equations which govern the motor's operation are used to compute a series of acceptable design parameter combinations for ideal operation. Engineering tradeoffs are then performed to minimize the irrecoverable energy loss while remaining within the design constraint boundaries. A final integrated structural design whose features allow it to be incorporated with the 500-Wh magnetically suspended flywheel is presented.

The influence of eddy currents on magnetic actuator performance

The present investigation of the effects of eddy currents on EM actuators' transient performance notes that a transfer function representation encompassing a first-order model of the eddy current influence can be useful in control system analysis. The method can be extended to represent the higher-order effects of eddy currents for actuators that cannot be represented by semiinfinite planes.

System considerations for a magnetically suspended flywheel

This paper presents the system considerations of a magnetically suspended energy storage system. The key technologies for system success are presented in a technology flowchart. The key areas identified and discussed include: the active bearing control system, the back-up touchdown bearings, and the flywheel dynamic performance and balancing. Two possible hardware designs are described which have been identified as having characteristics suitable for energy storage in low earth orbit spacecraft. Finally, a matrix of the key technologies versus the various prototype designs is presented to show the current progress of inertial energy storage, and to show the direction of future work.
