Decoherence factor as a convolution: an interplay between a Gaussian and an exponential coherence loss

Abstract We identify and investigate the origin and nature of the transition between Gaussian and exponential forms of decoherence: the decoherence factor (that controls the time dependence of the off-diagonal terms of the density matrix expressed in the pointer basis representation) is the convolution of the Fourier transforms of the spectral density and of the overlap (between the eigenstates the environment with and without couplings to the system). Spectral density alone tends to lead to the (approximately) Gaussian decay of coherence while the overlap alone results in a (largely) exponential decay. We show that these two contributions combine as a convolution, their relative importance controlled by the strength of the system-environment coupling. The resulting decoherence factor in the strong and weak coupling limits leads to predominantly Gaussian or exponential decay, respectively, as is demonstrated with two paradigmatic examples of decoherence—a spin-bath model and the quantum Brownian motion.

Quantum phase transition dynamics in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

The quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism (QKZM) predicts universal dynamical behavior near the quantum phase transitions (QPTs). It is now well understood for the one-dimensional quantum matter. Higher-dimensional systems, however, remain a challenge, complicated by the fundamentally different character of the associated QPTs and their underlying conformal field theories. In this work, we take the first steps toward theoretical exploration of the QKZM in two dimensions for interacting quantum matter. We study the dynamical crossing of the QPT in the paradigmatic Ising model by a joint effort of modern state-of-the-art numerical methods, including artificial neural networks and tensor networks. As a central result, we quantify universal QKZM behavior close to the QPT. We also note that, upon traversing further into the ferromagnetic regime, deviations from the QKZM prediction appear. We explain the observed behavior by proposing an extended QKZM taking into account spectral information as well as phase ordering. Our work provides a testing platform for higher-dimensional quantum simulators.

Large-scale structure after COBE: Peculiar velocities and correlations of cold dark matter halos

Large N-body simulations on parallel supercomputers allow one to simultaneously investigate large-scale structure and the formation of galactic halos with unprecedented resolution. Our study shows that the masses as well as the spatial distribution of halos on scales of tens of megaparsecs in a cold dark matter (CDM) universe with the spectrum normalized to the anisotropies detected by Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) is compatible with the observations. We also show that the average value of the relative pairwise velocity dispersion sigma(sub v) - used as a principal argument against COBE-normalized CDM models-is significantly lower for halos than for individual particles. When the observational methods of extracting sigma(sub v) are applied to the redshift catalogs obtained from the numerical experiments, estimates differ significantly between different observation-sized samples and overlap observational estimates obtained following the same procedure.

Tidal disruptions by supermassive black holes - Hydrodynamic evolution of stars on a Schwarzschild background

We present a three-dimensional numerical study of tidal disruption of a main-sequence star by a supermassive black hole. The simulations include general relativistic effects which are important in this regime. We analyze stars in a marginally bound orbit around the black hole with pericentric separation of a few Schwarzschild radii. We show that during a close passage, as a result of relativistic effects analogous to the perihelion shift, the trajectories of the debris of the star fan out into a crescent-like shape centered on the black hole. We also discuss the increase of the central density of the star as it approaches pericentric distance, the fraction of the debris accreted by the hole, its accretion rate, the distribution of debris orbits bound to the hole, and the velocity of unbound ejected material. We compare these results with the disruption of the star by a Newtonian point mass.
