Nanoscale electronic inhomogeneities in 1⁢ T ⁢-TaS 2

Here, we report a set of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) experiments studying native defects in CVT grown 1⁢T–TaS 2 . Six different sample surfaces from four bulk crystals were investigated. Wide area imaging reveals a prevalence of nanometer-scale electronic inhomogeneities due to native defects, with pristine regions interspersed. These inhomogeneities appear in typical as-grown crystals and coexist with a well-formed commensurate charge density wave of 1T–TaS 2 at low temperatures. Electronic inhomogeneities show up both as variations in the apparent height in STM and in the local density of states in STS; the bands can shift by 60 meV and the gap varies by more than 100 meV across inhomogeneities. These inhomogeneities are present in similar concentration across large-scale areas of all samples studied, but do not influence the charge density wave formation on local or global scales. The commensurate charge density wave exhibits long-range order and remains locally intact in the presence of these inhomogeneities.

Momentum-independent magnetic excitation continuum in the honeycomb iridate H 3 LiIr 2 O 6

Understanding the interplay between the inherent disorder and the correlated fluctuating-spin ground state is a key element in the search for quantum spin liquids. H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 is considered to be a spin liquid that is proximate to the Kitaev-limit quantum spin liquid. Its ground state shows no magnetic order or spin freezing as expected for the spin liquid state. However, hydrogen zero-point motion and stacking faults are known to be present. The resulting bond disorder has been invoked to explain the existence of unexpected low-energy spin excitations, although data interpretation remains challenging. Here, we use resonant X-ray spectroscopies to map the collective excitations in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 and characterize its magnetic state. In the low-temperature correlated state, we reveal a broad bandwidth of magnetic excitations. The central energy and the high-energy tail of the continuum are consistent with expectations for dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions between dynamically fluctuating spins. Furthermore, the absence of a momentum dependence to these excitations are consistent with disorder-induced broken translational invariance. Our low-energy data and the energy and width of the crystal field excitations support an interpretation of H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 as a disordered topological spin liquid in close proximity to bond-disordered versions of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid.

Electronic ground state of two nonmagnetic pentavalent honeycomb iridates

Here, we investigate the electronic structure of two Ir 5+ honeycomb iridates, Sr 3 CaIr 2 O 9 and NaIrO 3 , by means of resonant x-ray techniques. We confirm that Sr 3 CaIr 2 O 9 realizes a large spin-orbit driven nonmagnetic J eff =0 singlet ground state despite sizable tetragonal distortions of Ir coordinating octahedra. However, the resonant inelastic x-ray spectra of NaIrO 3 are drastically different from expectations for a Mott insulator with octahedrally coordinated Ir 5+ . We find that the data for NaIrO 3 can be best interpreted as originating from a narrow gap nonmagnetic S=0 band insulating ground state. Our results highlight the complex role of the ligand environment in the electronic structure of honeycomb iridates and the essential role of x-ray spectroscopy to characterize electronic ground states of insulating materials.

Enhanced hybridization in the electronic ground state of the intercalated honeycomb iridate Ag 3 LiIr 2 O 6

In this work, we use x-ray spectroscopy at the Ir L 3 /L 2 absorption edge to study powder samples of the intercalated honeycomb magnet Ag 3 LiIr 2 O 6 . Based on x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements, and exact diagonalization calculations including nearest-neighbor Ir-Ir electron hopping integrals, we argue that the intercalation of Ag atoms results in a delocalized electronic structure with enhanced Ir-O hybridization, departing from the local relativistic j eff =1/2 state. We find that the relative orbital contribution to the magnetic moment is increased and the magnetization density is spatially extended and asymmetric in this hybridized state. Our results confirm the importance of metal-ligand hybridization in the magnetism of transition metal oxides and provide empirical guidance for understanding the collective magnetism in intercalated honeycomb iridates.

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

Mirror symmetry breaking in a model insulating cuprate

Among the most actively studied issues in the cuprates are the natures of the pseudogap and strange metal states and their relationship to superconductivity. There is general agreement that the low-energy physics of the Mott-insulating parent state is well captured by a two-dimensional spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. However, recent observations of a large thermal Hall conductivity in several parent cuprates appear to defy this simple model and suggest proximity to a magneto-chiral state that breaks all mirror planes that are perpendicular to the CuO 2 layers. Here we use optical second harmonic generation to directly resolve the point group symmetries of the model parent cuprate Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 . We report evidence of an order parameter that breaks all perpendicular mirror planes and is consistent with a magneto-chiral state in zero magnetic field. Although this order is clearly coupled to the antiferromagnetism, we are unable to realize its time-reversed partner by thermal cycling through the antiferromagnetic transition temperature or by sampling different spatial locations. Finally, this suggests that the order onsets above the Neel temperature and may be relevant to the mechanism of pseudogap formation.
