Synthesis and Properties of the Helium Clathrate and Defect Perovskite [He 2– x $^\square$ x ][CaNb]F 6

The defect double perovskite [He 2– x $^\square$ x ][CaNb]F 6 , with helium on its A-site, can be prepared by the insertion of helium into ReO 3 -type CaNbF 6 at high pressure. Upon cooling from 300 to 100 K under 0.4 GPa helium, ~60% of the A-sites become occupied. Helium uptake was quantified by both neutron powder diffraction and gas insertion and release measurements. After the conversion of gauge pressure to fugacity, the uptake of helium by CaNbF 6 can be described by a Langmuir isotherm. The enthalpy of absorption for helium in [He 2– x $^\square$ x ][CaNb]F 6 is estimated to be ~+3(1) kJ mol –1 , implying that its formation is entropically favored. Helium is able to diffuse through the material on a time scale of minutes at temperatures down to ~150 K but is trapped at 100 K and below. The insertion of helium into CaNbF 6 reduces the magnitude of its negative thermal expansion, increases the bulk modulus, and modifies its phase behavior. On compressing pristine CaNbF 6 , at 50 and 100 K, a cubic (Fm$\overline{3}$m) to rhombohedral (R$\overline{3}$) phase transition was observed at <0.20 GPa. However, a helium-containing sample remained cubic at 0.4 GPa and 50 K. CaNbF 6 , compressed in helium at room temperature, remained cubic to >3.7 GPa, the limit of our X-ray diffraction measurements, in contrast to prior reports that upon compression in a nonpenetrating medium, a phase transition is detected at ~0.4 GPa.

Origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity and effect of external pressure on the complex magnetism of the 6⁢ H perovskite Ba 3 ⁢Ho⁢Ru 2⁢ O 9

The compound Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9 magnetically orders at 50 K (T N1 ), followed by another complex magnetic ordering at 10.2 K (T N2 ). The second magnetic phase transition was characterized by the coexistence of two competing magnetic ground states associated with two different magnetic wave vectors (K 1 = 0.5 0 0 and K 2 = 0.25 0.25 0). The multiferroicity and magnetoelectric coupling were predicted below T N2 in these 4d-based materials. Here, in this work, we have discussed the origin of spin-driven ferroelectricity, which is not known yet, and the nature of magnetoelectric domains. We have investigated the compound through time-of-flight neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), ac susceptibility, frequency-dependent complex dielectric spectroscopy, and dc magnetization under external pressure. We have demonstrated that the noncollinear structure involving two different magnetic ions, Ru (4d) and Ho (4f), breaks the spatial inversion symmetry via inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction through strong 4d-4f magnetic correlation, which shifts the oxygen atoms and results in nonzero polarization. Such an observation of inverse DM interaction from two different magnetic ions which cause ferroelectricity is rarely observed. The stronger spin-orbit coupling of 4d orbital might play a major role in creating DM interaction of noncollinear spins. We have systematically studied the spin and dipolar dynamics, which exhibit intriguing behavior with shorter coherence lengths of second magnetic phase associated with the k 2 wave vector. The results manifest the development of finite-size magnetoelectric domains instead of true long-range ordering, which justifies the experimentally obtained low value of ferroelectric polarization. The lattice parameters and volume show a sharp anomaly at T N2 obtained by analyzing the temperature-dependence XRD, which is consistent with the ferroelectric transition, predicting a noncentrosymmetric space group, $P\bar{6}2c$, for this compound. Furthermore, we have investigated the effect of external pressure on this complex magnetism. The result reveals an enhancement of ordering temperature by the application of external pressure (~1.6 K/GPa). The external pressure might favor stabilizing the magnetic ground state associated with second magnetic phase. Our study shows an unconventional mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity involving inverse DM interaction between Ru (4d) and Ho (4f) magnetic ions due to strong 4d-4f cross coupling.

Synthesizing pseudo-Kossel lines from neutron transmission data. II. Validation with neutron diffraction data

A new method to recover the orientation matrix of a single crystal with a known unit cell by analyzing synthesized pseudo-Kossel lines from time-of-flight neutron transmission data has been outlined in a companion article [Dessieux et al. (2023). J. Appl. Cryst. 56, https://dx.doi.org/10.1107/S1600576723001346; referred to here as Article I]. In this work, validation of this new technique is presented by employing experimental neutron transmission and diffraction measurements performed on two copper single-crystal specimens. Time-of-flight spectra were recorded during rotation (ω) of the single crystals about a vertical axis perpendicular to the incident neutron beam. The λ–ω maps recorded in transmission are utilized to determine the crystal orientation with respect to the neutron beam, following the procedure presented in Article I. Further, to validate the indexing procedure, the crystal orientations are compared with those obtained via conventional methods using the diffraction data. The resulting pseudo-Kossel lines across the 2D detectors are also observed for the first time.

Synthesizing pseudo-Kossel lines from neutron transmission data. I. An analytical approach for recovering single-crystal orientation

The energy-dispersive neutron spectra transmitted through single crystals are characterized by sharp Bragg dips at specific wavelengths, where Bragg's law is being fulfilled for certain crystallographic planes. This phenomenon allows for developing methods for crystal-orientation determination techniques similar to electron backscatter diffraction and X-ray diffraction microscopy. This work presents a new procedure to recover the orientation matrix for single crystals using transmission spectra recorded during rotation of a crystal about an axis perpendicular to a polychromatic neutron beam. The proposed method consists of an initial transformation of the as-collected wavelength–rotation maps to a wavevector $\textit{K}$ space, resulting in linear pseudo-Kossel lines that are suitable for analysis and indexing using image-processing procedures. Further, simulated neutron transmission spectra through a copper crystal with known orientations were used to set and prove the numerical approach. This technique may be expanded for cases where the neutron beam intersects multiple single-crystal grains with different orientations.

A chiral alkali metal capped Ni 4 cubane complex: Synthesis, structure, magnetic and catalytic bromination studies

A new chiral NaO 2 Ni 4 O 2 N 2 cluster has been developed with a distorted capped cubane-type structure. The structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The tetradentate Schiff-base ligand was synthesized by the condensation of o-vanillin and $\textit{D}$-(-)–threo-2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediol. X-ray structure reveals that the complex possesses a Ni 4 cubane cluster where sodium ion is anchored on the face of the cubane structure. Continuous shape measurement studies revealed that all the Ni centres are in distorted octahedral geometry and sodium ion adopts the spherical square pyramidal geometry. Further structural exploration reveals that the complex shows local distortions of the coordination geometries at each metal site, and these distortions govern the magnetic anisotropy associated with each Ni II ion. For the present case, an elongation ($d_{str}$ > 0) of the octahedral coordination sphere results in a local easy-plane anisotropy, with a positive $D_{Ni(II)}$ parameter. Temperature dependant magnetization measurements showed a predominant ferromagnetic interaction amongst the four Ni centres. This complex is also catalytically active towards bromination of aromatic phenolic compounds. Initial catalytic activity was verified with the conversion of phenol red to bromophenol blue. Different phenolic substances show good conversion to their corresponding bromo derivatives. The complex showed good catalytic activity towards bromination of aromatic phenolic compounds, offering up to 99% conversion with 100% selectively to their corresponding bromo derivatives.

Cubic to hexagonal tuning in Fe 2 Mn(Si 1– x Ge x ) Heusler alloys

Here, the competition between the stability of the cubic and hexagonal full Heusler alloys and the implications concerning their magnetic properties were systematically studied through the detailed structural and magnetic characterization of the Fe 2 Mn(Si 1– x Ge x ) system. This system was specifically chosen as the parent compositions are cubic ( x = 0) and hexagonal ( x = 1). It is found that the formation of hexagonal phases occurs for the x ≥ 0.6 samples, whereas its phase fraction monotonically increases with x until the pure hexagonal Fe 2 MnGe is formed. The change in structure results in high sensitiveness of both the saturation of magnetization ($M_S$) and Curie temperature ($T_C$) with x values, related to a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the hexagonal phase. Both cubic and hexagonal magnetic features were qualitatively reproduced by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides an experimental and theoretical foundation for further design of Heusler systems with controlled structures and magnetic properties.
