Engineering a pure Dirac regime in ZrTe$_5$

Real-world topological semimetals typically exhibit Dirac and Weyl nodes that coexist with trivial Fermi pockets. This tends to mask the physics of the relativistic quasiparticles. Using the example of ZrTe _5 5 , we show that strain provides a powerful tool for in-situ tuning of the band structure such that all trivial pockets are pushed far away from the Fermi energy, but only for a certain range of Van der Waals gaps. Our results naturally reconcile contradicting reports on the presence or absence of additional pockets in ZrTe _5 5 , and provide a clear map of where to find a pure three-dimensional Dirac semimetallic phase in the structural parameter space of the material.

Unraveling the Orbital Physics in a Canonical Orbital System KCuF 3

We explore the existence of the collective orbital excitations, orbitons, in the canonical orbital system KCuF 3 using the Cu L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We show that the nondispersive high-energy peaks result from the Cu 2+ dd orbital excitations. These high-energy modes display good agreement with the ab initio quantum chemistry calculation, indicating that the d d excitations are highly localized. At the same time, the low-energy excitations present clear dispersion. They match extremely well with the two-spinon continuum following the comparison with Müller ansatz calculations. The localized d d excitations and the observation of the strongly dispersive magnetic excitations suggest that the orbiton dispersion is below the resolution detection limit. Our results can reconcile with the strong local Jahn-Teller effect in KCuF 3 , which predominantly drives orbital ordering.

Domain wall diode based on functionally graded Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction

In this work, we present a general approach for studying the dynamics of domain walls in biaxial ferromagnetic stripes with functionally graded Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI). By engineering the spatial profile of the DMI parameter we propose the concept of a diode, which implements filtering of domain walls of certain topological charge and helicity. We base our study on phenomenological Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equations with additional Zhang–Li spin-transfer terms using a collective variable approach. In the effective equations of motion the gradients of DMI play the role of a driving force which competes with current driving. All analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations.
