The Effect of Variable End of Charge Battery Management on Small-Cell Batteries

Batteries are critical components for spacecraft, supplying power to all electrical systems during solar eclipse. These components must be lightweight due to launch vehicle limitations and the desire to fly heavier, more capable payloads, and must show excellent capacity retention with age to support the ever growing durations of space missions. ABSL's heritage Lithium Ion cell, the ABSL 18650HC, is an excellent low mass solution to this problem that has been proven capable of supporting long mission durations. The NASA Glenn Research Center recently proposed and initiated a test to study the effects of reduced end of charge voltage on aging of the ABSL 18650HC and other Lithium Ion cells. This paper presents the testing details, a method to analyze and compare capacity fade between the different cases, and a preliminary analysis of the to-date performance of ABSL s cells. This initial analysis indicates that employing reduced end of charge techniques could double the life capabilities of the ABSL 18650HC cell. Accordingly, continued investigation is recommended, particularly at higher depths of discharge to better assess the method s potential mass savings for short duration missions.

Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) Charger: Spacesuit Battery Charger Design with 2-Fault Tolerance to Catastrophic Hazards

Charger design that is 2-fault tolerant to catastrophic has been achieved for the Spacesuit Li-ion Battery with key features. Power supply control circuit and 2 microprocessors independently control against overcharge. 3 microprocessor control against undercharge (false positive: Go for EVA) conditions. 2 independent channels provide functional redundancy. Capable of charge balancing cell banks in series. Cell manufacturing and performance uniformity is excellent with both designs. Once a few outliers are removed, LV cells are slightly more uniform than MoliJ cells. If cell balance feature of charger is ever invoked, it will be an indication of a significant degradation issue, not a nominal condition.

Methods and apparatus to facilitate alkali metal transport during battery cycling, and batteries incorporating same

An anode includes a mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) with an open pore structure. The open pore structure includes open pores to facilitate motion of an alkali metal into and/or out of the MIEC. The open pore structure thus provides open space to relieve the stresses generated by the alkali metal when charging/discharging a battery. The MIEC is formed from a material that is thermodynamically and electrochemically stable against the alkali metal to prevent the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) debris and the formation of dead alkali metal. The MIEC may also be passive (the MIEC does not store or release alkali metal). In one example, the open pore structure may be an array of substantially aligned tubules with a width less than about 300 nm, a wall thickness between about 1 nm to about 30 nm, and a height of at least 10 um arranged as a honeycomb.

The Relationship between Ionic Conductivity and Solvation Structures of Localized High-Concentration Fluorinated Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) combines a diluent with high concentration electrolyte (HCE), offering promising properties. The ions, solvent, and diluent interact to form a complex heterogenous liquid structure, where high salt concentration clusters are embedded in diluent. Optimizing LHCE for desired electrolyte properties like high ionic conductivity, low viscosity, effective solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formability, within the vast chemical and compositional design space requires deeper understanding and theoretical guidance. For this work, we investigated the structures and conductivity of LHCEs based on a fluorinated solvent with two different diluents at varying concentrations. The 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl trifluoroacetate (TFPTFA) enters the solvation cluster due to its stronger Li-ion interactions, whereas 1,1,2,2-tetrafuoroethyl 2,2,2-trifuoroethyl ether (TFETFE) enters only at extremely high diluent concentrations. The ionic conductivity increases with decreasing diluent concentrations, with a slope change during cluster percolation. Overall, TFETFE demonstrates higher effectiveness than TFPTFA, forming higher local salt concentration clusters, and resulting in higher ionic conductivity.
