Enhancement of Superconductivity in WP via Oxide-Assisted Chemical Vapor Transport

Tungsten monophosphide (WP) has been reported to superconduct below 0.8 K, and theoretical work has predicted an unconventional Cooper pairing mechanism. Here we present data for WP single crystals grown by means of chemical vapor transport (CVT) of WO3, P, and I2. In comparison to synthesis using WP powder as a starting material, this technique results in samples with substantially decreased low-temperature scattering and favors a more three-dimensional morphology. We also find that the resistive superconducting transitions in these samples begin above 1 K. Variation in Tc is often found in strongly correlated superconductors, and its presence in WP could be the result of influence from a competing order and/or a non-s-wave gap.

Order–Disorder Phase Stabilization by Pressure‐Induced Charge Transfer Enhances the Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Effect in Multiferroic BaFe 4 O 7

Abstract Multiferroic ferroelectric photovoltaic (FPV) materials, combining magnetic and ferroelectric properties, are of paramount importance for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. However, optimizing both the remanent polarization and the optical bandgap—key factors for enhanced FPV performance—presents a significant challenge due to their trade‐off. This work shows that pressure‐induced charge transfer between different metal sites can break this trade‐off. Above ≈20 GPa, charge transfer between different trivalent iron (Fe) sites in the multiferroic material BaFe 4 O 7 leads to Fe valence disproportionation, FeO 4 tetrahedra disorder, and Jahn–Teller distortion of FeO 6 octahedra. These changes reduce the bandgap, lower resistivity, and enhance ferroelectric polarization, resulting in a 2.5‐fold increase in photocurrent. Upon decompression, BaFe 4 O 7 retains an order–disorder structure, optimal ferroelectric and optical properties at ambient conditions. This work provides a novel pathway to simultaneously optimizing ferroelectricity and bandgap via pressure‐induced charge transfer, overcoming the traditional trade‐off in FPV materials, and offers a promising approach for developing high polarization performance, narrow‐bandgap FPV materials.

Synthesis‐Related Nanoscale Defects in Mo‐Based Janus Monolayers Revealed by Cross‐Correlated AFM and TERS Imaging

2D Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising candidates for various applications including non-linear optics, energy harvesting, and catalysis. These materials are usually synthesized via chemical conversion of pristine TMDs. Nanometer-scale characterization of the obtained Janus materials’ morphology and local composition is crucial for both the synthesis optimization and the future device applications. In this work, we present the results of cross-correlated atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) study of Janus monolayers synthesized by the hydrogen plasma-assisted chemical conversion of MoSe 2 and MoS 2 . We demonstrate that the choice of both the growth substrate and the starting TMD influences the residual strain, thereby shaping the nanoscale morphology of the resulting Janus material. Furthermore, by employing TERS imaging, we show the presence of nanoscale islands (≈20 nm across) of MoSe 2 - ${\mathrm{Mo}}_{{\mathrm{Se}}}^{\mathrm{S}}$ (MoS 2 -${\mathrm{Mo}}_{\mathrm{S}}^{{\mathrm{Se}}}$) vertical heterostructures originating from the bilayer nanoislands in the precursor monolayer crystals. The understanding of the origins of nanoscale defects in Janus TMDs revealed in this study can help with further optimization of the Janus conversion process towards uniform and wrinkle-/crack-free Janus materials. Moreover, this work shows that cross-correlated AFM and TERS imaging is a powerful and accessible method for studying nanoscale composition and defects in Janus TMD monolayers.

Structure–Property Linkage in Alloys Using Graph Neural Network and Explainable Artificial Intelligence

Deep learning tools have recently shown significant potential for accelerating the prediction of microstructure–property linkage in materials. While deep neural networks like convolution neural networks (CNNs) can extract physics information from 3D microstructure images, they often require a large network architecture and substantial training time. In this research, we trained a graph neural network (GNN) using phase field generated microstructures of Ni-Al alloys to predict the evolution of mechanical properties. We found that a single GNN is capable of accurately predicting the strengthening of Ni-Al alloys with microstructures of varying sizes and dimensions, which cannot otherwise be done with a CNN. Additionally, GNN requires significantly less GPU utilization than CNN and offers more interpretable explanation of predictions using saliency analysis as features are manually defined in the graph. We also utilize explainable artificial intelligence tool Bayesian Inference to determine the coefficients in the power law equation that governs coarsening of precipitates. Overall, our work demonstrates the ability of the GNN to accurately and efficiently extract relevant information from material microstructures without having restrictions on microstructure size or dimension and offers an interpretable explanation.

Robust Spectral Anomaly Detection in EELS Spectral Images via 3D Convolutional Variational Autoencoders

Abstract A 3D Convolutional Variational Autoencoder (3D‐CVAE) is introduced for automated anomaly detection in electron energy‐loss spectroscopy spectrum imaging (EELS‐SI) data. This approach leverages the full 3D structure of EELS‐SI data to detect subtle spectral anomalies while preserving both spatial and spectral correlations across the datacube. By employing cross‐entropy loss and training on bulk spectra, the model learns to reconstruct bulk features characteristic of the defect‐free material. In exploring methods for anomaly detection, both the 3D‐CVAE approach and principal component analysis (PCA) are evaluated, testing their performance using FeL‐edge ΔEpeak shifts designed to simulate material defects. These results show that 3D‐CVAE achieves superior anomaly detection and maintains consistent performance across various shift magnitudes. The method demonstrates clear bimodal separation between bulk and anomalous spectra, enabling reliable classification. Further analysis verifies that lower‐dimensional representations are robust to anomalies in the data. While performance advantages over PCA diminish with decreasing anomaly concentration, our method maintains high reconstruction quality even in challenging, noise‐dominated spectral regions. This approach provides a robust framework for unsupervised automated detection of spectral anomalies in EELS‐SI data, particularly valuable for analyzing complex material systems.

Glancing Angle Deposition in Gas Sensing: Bridging Morphological Innovations and Sensor Performances

Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) has emerged as a versatile and powerful nanofabrication technique for developing next-generation gas sensors by enabling precise control over nanostructure geometry, porosity, and material composition. Through dynamic substrate tilting and rotation, GLAD facilitates the fabrication of highly porous, anisotropic nanostructures, such as aligned, tilted, zigzag, helical, and multilayered nanorods, with tunable surface area and diffusion pathways optimized for gas detection. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent advances in GLAD-based gas sensor design, focusing on how structural engineering and material integration converge to enhance sensor performance. Key materials strategies include the construction of heterojunctions and core–shell architectures, controlled doping, and nanoparticle decoration using noble metals or metal oxides to amplify charge transfer, catalytic activity, and redox responsiveness. GLAD-fabricated nanostructures have been effectively deployed across multiple gas sensing modalities, including resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and optical platforms, where their high aspect ratios, tailored porosity, and defect-rich surfaces facilitate enhanced gas adsorption kinetics and efficient signal transduction. These devices exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity toward a range of analytes, including NO2, CO, H2S, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with detection limits often reaching the parts-per-billion level. Emerging innovations, such as photo-assisted sensing and integration with artificial intelligence for data analysis and pattern recognition, further extend the capabilities of GLAD-based systems for multifunctional, real-time, and adaptive sensing. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are discussed, emphasizing the promise of GLAD as a scalable platform for next-generation gas sensing technologies.

Interface Evolutionand Long-Term Performance of NegativeCarbon Fiber Structural Electrodes

Abstract Laminated structural batteries present a transformative solution to reducing weight constraints in electric vehicles. These structural batteries are based on a multifunctional material that incorporates an energy storage function within a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. Despite the potential of this technology, the intricate morphology of fiber–matrix or electrode–electrolyte interfaces and the impact of long-term cycling at low current rates (C-rates) on these interfaces remain insufficiently understood. This study addresses these critical knowledge gaps by examining the influence of matrix composition on the long-term electrochemical performance of structural battery electrodes and exploring advanced techniques to investigate carbon fiber–matrix interfaces. Localized imaging and X-ray scattering techniques were used to characterize morphological changes at the electrode–electrolyte interfaces by analyzing negative structural electrodes. The findings revealed that the matrix composition influences long-term electrochemical behavior and fiber–matrix interface formation. While the intrinsic properties of carbon fibers largely remain unaffected by long-term cycling, cycling promotes debonding at fiber–matrix interfaces. Nonetheless, residual regions of adhesion persist, underscoring the potential for preserving multifunctionality even under prolonged cycling conditions. These insights advance the understanding of interface dynamics, which is critical for optimizing structural battery technologies.

Abstract To address the issues of limited ionic conductivity and poor interface stability at room and low temperatures in solid‐state electrolytes, a robust intrinsic ferroelectrolyte or nanoferroelectrolyte strategy for engineering solid‐state flexible ferroelectric composite electrolytes utilizing strongly coupled intrinsic ion conducting 2D/2D sodium‐rich anti‐perovskite (NaRAP)/ferroelectric perovskite heterostructures is introduced. Herein, highly scalable PVDF‐based metaferroelectrolytes with Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/Ca 2 Na 2 Nb 5 O 16 − (CNNO − ) nanosheets into a ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) matrix, through an in situ cross‐linking and spontaneous bridging method, for compact solid‐state sodium batteries (SSBs), are reported. Benefiting from unique well‐dispersed 3D ferroelectric coupled network and the Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/CNNO − ‐induced PVDF‐HFP ferroelectric β phase, the Na + flux is regulated, thereby inhibiting Na dendrite growth at the interface. Notably, the optimized PH‐5% NC metaferroelectrolyte exhibits rapid ion transport (1.11 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C), a wide electrochemical window (> 4.8V), superior conformal mechanical compatibility, improved flexibility, good elasticity and flame retardancy. The solid‐state Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /PH‐5% NC/Na batteries present a stable cycling performance (remaining 56.4 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C) even at 0 °C, potential for cost‐effective, safe, stable and compact SSB energy storage over 600 Wh L −1 , vastly surpassing 365 Wh L −1 of the current commercial sodium‐ion liquid‐electrolyte batteries.

High‐Performance Rechargeable Lithium‐Chlorine Batteries with ALD Conformal Starburst Porous Graphene Positive Electrodes

Abstract Rechargeable alkali metal‐chlorine batteries are emerging as a promising high‐energy‐density solution. However, they confront significant challenges, including the primary issue stemming from the weak binding affinity of cathode materials for Cl 2 , which leads to a sluggish and inadequate supply of Cl 2 during the redox reactions, resulting in a shortened cycle life and low Coulombic efficiency (CE), particularly when operating at ultrahigh specific capacity outputs. Herein, an Al 2 O 3 ‐skinned heterostructured starburst porous graphene with conformal metasurfaces (Al 2 O 3 @rGO) is reported, crafted from a hierarchical porous starburst graphene arranged in a unique layered structure by the PTFE microemulsion skin effect, leveraging subsequent fluidized bed atomic layer deposition (FBALD) of Al 2 O 3 groups. Al 2 O 3 @rGO features superhydrophilicity, effective adsorption, fast kinetics from stable dynamic respiratory interface, high electrical and thermal conductivity anisotropy, intelligent thermal management and safe operation over a wide temperature range. Consequently, the Li‐Cl 2 @Al 2 O 3 @rGO battery achieves an ultrahigh discharge specific capacity of 5000 mAh g −1 at ≈100% CE, and even delivers stable cycling over 200 cycles with 2000 mAh g −1 at an average CE of 99.8% under low temperature environment of ‐40 °C. The scalable heterostructure approach offers a sustainable perspective of the development of functionalized metamaterials and metasurfaces for next‐generation safe and energy‐dense batteries and broader applications.

Chemical Bond Covalency in Superionic Halide Solid‐State Electrolytes

Abstract Halide solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) are promising superionic conductors with high oxidative stability and ionic conductivity, making them attractive for all‐solid‐state lithium‐ion batteries. However, most studies have focused on ion‐stacking structures, overlooking the role of bond characteristics in ionic transport. Here, we investigate bond dynamics and the superionic transition (SIT) in bromide electrolyte, Li 3 InBr 6 , using synchrotron X‐ray techniques and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We demonstrate that the SIT in halide SSEs is driven by a thermally induced transition in bonding character (ionic to covalent) rather than a change in crystal phase. AIMD simulations further reveal enhanced Li⁺ diffusion and collective anion motion at elevated temperatures. Expanding our study to Li 3 LnBr 6 (Ln = Gd, Tb, Ho, Tm, and Lu), we confirm the widespread occurrence of SIT in this material class, with Li 3 GdBr 6 exhibiting the highest ionic conductivity (5.2 mS cm −1 at 298 K). More importantly, the ionic‐covalent transition is highly tunable through electrolyte modifications, such as cation/anion substitution and synthesis methods. Our findings provide a new perspective on ionic transport, highlighting the critical role of chemical bond characteristics in halide SSEs.
