Modulation theory

Abstract

Cosmic ray modulation theory is reviewed with regard to microscopic effects, gradients, and drift. It is noted that the three-dimensional structure of the heliosphere has been shown to be very important for the understanding of modulation, even for effects observed in the solar equatorial plane. In addition, recent revisions in the understanding of the magnetic field structure have led to a dramatic change in the understanding of modulation.
