Phase-A COBE study

Abstract

A scaled version of a conical apodizing horm similar to the one used in the Cosmic Background Explorer as the antenna for the far infrared absolute spectrometer (FIRAS) was tested to determine its diffraction patterns. The test transmitter used and results are described. Calculation of the tradeoff between noise and spectral resolution for the FIRAS are examined. Flexural transports, the optical properties of the Martin-Pupplet polarizing interferometer, and radiation absorption of thin bismuth films are also discussed.
