Spacelab - The multimission machine

Abstract

The high point of a decade of collaboration between NASA and ESA may have been the Space Shuttle/Spacelab-1 mission of 1983, which was dedicated to multidisciplinary science and verification tasks. Still to be verified by Spacelab-2, on the basis of elements designed, developed and funded by ESA, are 'igloo' pallets for dedicated missions and the Instrument Pointing System. Further variations of mixed cargo carrier systems are the Materials Science Laboratory, the Structural Technology Experiments Platform, and the Dedicated Discipline Laboratories, whose various features and capabilities are presently discussed.
