The dynamics of warm and cold climates
Abstract
Changes occurring as a result of climatic warming or cooling are presently investigated by comparing the atmospheric dynamics of five different climate simulations encompassing two ice ages, current and doubled CO2 climates, and a simulation of the warm Cretaceous; a global average surface air temperature range of 13 C is covered by the models. It is noted that many zonally averaged processes do not change systematically as climate changes: the January Hadley cell, the jet stream, mean precipitation patterns, and total atmospheric transport, show very little variation among the different climate simulations. These features result from balances between competing factors; while individual processes differ in the cold and warm climates, there is considerable compensation.
