Telescience in orbit

Abstract

A promising concept for the scientific use of the NASA Space Station involves attaching payloads to the dual keel truss structure of the manned base, specifically on the upper and lower booms. The lower boom will be primarily employed by the earth observation and space plasma studies community, while the upper boom will be used by astronomers for such instruments as the Solar Optical Telescope and the Astrometric Telescope Facility. The indispensability of a robust Space Shuttle system for these Space Station uses is noted.
