A real light echo - Nova Persei 1901
Abstract
Observations of Nova Persei 1901, a light echo from SN 1987A, are reviewed. The large broken outer ring and bright inner ring of the nova are examined. The outer ring has been shown to increase its radius at a speed of about 11 arcmin/year. Since the distance to Nova Persei 1901 is about 400-600 pc, the apparent projected velocity of expansion is about 4-5 c, making the nova the first observed superluminal cosmic source.
