Spares quantification for the Space Shuttle Orbiters

Abstract

A study to determine the numerous factors that must be considered and utilized to accurately quantify the number of spares necessary to support the Orbiter processing is presented. Previously the method used to quantify the requirements for spares was based on a probability of sufficiency (POS) equation. It was found that there are several categories of failures, not only the operating hour dependency type used in POS. Therefore, it was determined that various methods of quantifying spares should be utilized for the different categories of failures. Trending analysis of the failure history was deemed necessary. Also, the working environment was determined to be an important factor in the failure data.
