The large-scale structures in turbulent plane Couette flow
Abstract
Turbulent plane Couette flow has been numerically simulated at a Reynolds number, Re = U(sub w)(h)/nu = 6000. Preliminary examinations of the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields revealed the existence of large scale eddies which grow in the flow direction with time and have the spanwise scale as large as the channel height. The persistence of the longitudinal eddies was not observed when the small scales in the spanwise direction were not well resolved, indicating that the growth of the large scale longitudinal eddies requires the contribution from the small scale motions in the spanwise direction. The statistical correlation in the flow agree well with the experimental results.
