Mars Observer mission

Abstract

The salient features of the Mars Observer mission are overviewed. Special attention is given to the science objectives of the mission, the spacecraft design, the mapping orbit to be used, and the mission operations. The mission is to be launched in August 1993 and, after four months of trim maneuvers, will come into a low-altitude circular orbit where it will make systematic measurements of the atmosphere, the surface, and the interior of Mars.
