Energetics of the shock potential
Abstract
It is shown that the difference between proton energy loss and electron energy gain can be understood from a knowledge of the asymptotic properties of the shock that are derivable from the Rankine-Hugoniot relations. No reference to a component of the magnetic field that is out of the coplanarity plane is required. At the same time, we show that such a field does exist and calculate its magnitude.
