Radiative force model performance for TOPEX/Poseidon precision orbit determination

Abstract

The TOPEX/Poseidon spacecraft was launched to study the Earth's oceans. To maximize the benefit from the alimetric data collected, mission requirements dictate that TOPEX/Poseidon's orbit must be computed at extremely high accuracy. To meet these demands, a nonconservative force model which accounts for the satellite's complex geometry, attitude and surface properties has been developed. The 'box-wing' representation treats the spacecraft as the combination of flat plates arranged in the shape of a box and a connected solar array. Model performance and parameter sensitivities are discussed.

On the modeling and optimization of Schottky varactor frequency multipliers at submillimeter wavelengths

Schottky varactor frequency multipliers are used to generate local oscillator power at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The equivalent circuit of the Schottky varactor contains a junction capacitance, a junction conductance, a series resistance and a model for electron velocity saturation. A millimeter wavelengths the equivalent circuits is affected by the edge effects, which are due to the small-area circular anode. The correction factors due to the edge effect for the junction capacitance and for the series resistance are available in the literature. In this work the electron velocity saturation is modeled by limiting the velocity of the transition front between the depleted and undepleted layer. By using this model the maximum current of the diode is given by the actual area of the transition front between depleted and undepleted layers, and is therefore related to the capacitance correction factor. The new model has been tested by analyzing a two diode balanced doubler for 160 GHz presented earlier in the literature. The agreement between the theoretical results and the measurements is excellent. The new diode model is useful in optimization of varactors for high millimeter and submillimeter wave frequencies.

Van Driest transformation and compressible wall-bounded flows

The transformation validity question utilizing resulting data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of supersonic, isothermal cold wall channel flow was investigated. The DNS results stood for a wide scope of parameter and were suitable for the purpose of examining the generality of Van Driest transformation. The Van Driest law of the wall can be obtained from the inner-layer similarity arguments. It was demonstrated that the Van Driest transformation cannot be incorporated to collapse the sublayer and log-layer velocity profiles simultaneously. Velocity and temperature predictions according to the preceding composite mixing-length model were presented. Despite satisfactory congruity with the DNS data, the model must be perceived as an engineering guide and not as a rigorous analysis.

Parallel implicit unstructured grid Euler solvers

A mesh-vertex finite volume scheme for solving the Euler equations on triangular unstructured meshes is implemented on a multiple-instruction/multiple-data stream parallel computer. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme is used to solve two-dimensional flow problems. A family of implicit schemes is also developed to solve these problems, where the linear system that arises at each time step is solved by a preconditioned GMRES algorithm. Two partitioning strategies are employed: one that partitions triangles and the other that partitions vertices. The choice of the preconditioner in a distributed memory setting is discussed. All of the methods are compared both in terms of elapsed times and convergence rates. It is shown that the implicit schemes offer adequate parallelism at the expense of minimal sequential overhead. The use of a global coarse grid to further minimize this overhead is also investigated. The schemes are implemented on a distributed memory parallel computer, the Intel iPSC/860.
