Unveiling the Engines In QSOS: A Multi-Wavelength Study

Abstract

In the past year, the project has passed three major milestones: 1. Completed the spectroscopic emission line measurements for the full Hubble preCOSTAR FOS sample, resulting in the publication of "Emission Line Properties of AGN from a pre-COSTAR FOS HST Spectral Atlas" in the ApJ. 2. By compiling narrow absorption line (NAL) and broad emission line (BEL) measurements for the subsample of FOS AGN showing both NV and CIV absorption, we have given the first conclusive evidence that the NAL clouds and BEL clouds have similar metallicity. The resulting paper, just resubmitted to ApJL after a largely congratulatory referee report, is entitled "Evidence for a Strong Abundance Correlation Between Emission and Absorption Lines in AGN". 3) Collaboration with Dr. Crenshaw at GSU has also yielded a complete merged atlas of FOS spectra from the postCOSTAR epoch. These will be analyzed and published in the next year, along with investigations of correlations to high energy (X-ray) emission.
