Three-Dimensional Radiative Transfer in Cloudy Atmospheres
Abstract
This presentation will discuss the development of three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer in cloudy atmospheres for the last two decades. The main emphasis will be put on the remote sensing problems. Observational evidence of 3D radiative effects that influence retrievals of cloud and aerosol properties will be shown using examples from MODIS and ASTER. The international Intercomparison of 3D Radiation Codes (13RC) will be also discussed. Finally, I will briefly review the results and advanced radiative transfer tools recently developed by our team at Goddard Space Flight Center (Cahalan, Chiu, Marshak, Oreopoulos, Varnai, Wen and Wiscombe). Note that the field of 3D radiative transfer is now sufficiently mature and its first book has just been published by Springer, edited by Marshak and Davis.
