Abstract

This slide presentation reviews the importance for the Mock LISA Data Challenges (MLDC). Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a gravitational wave (GW) observatory that will return data such that data analysis is integral to the measurement concept. Further rationale of the MLDC are to kickstart the development of a LISA data-analysis computational infrastructure, and to encourage, track, and compare progress in LISA data-analysis development in the open community. The MLDCs is a coordinated, voluntary effort in GW community, that will periodically issue datasets with synthetic noise and GW signals from sources of undisclosed parameters; increasing difficulty. The challenge participants return parameter estimates and descriptions of search methods. Some of the challenges and the resultant entries are reviewed. The aim is to show that LISA data analysis is possible, and to develop new techniques, using multiple international teams for the development of LISA core analysis tools

Assessment of Accelerated Stress Testing Data for Silicon Photovoltaics Using Tensor Decomposition Methods

In this work, we examine the use of high-order tensor decompositions to analyze degradation pathways emerging from accelerated stress testing of silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules. Matrix-based decompositions are powerful tools for studying two-dimensional data arrays and form the foundation of a host of classical data analysis techniques. Tensors are high-order extrapolations of matrices that are able to account for more parameter dimensions, and a variety of tensor decomposition methods have been developed that similarly seek to extend insights from matrix decompositions to higher dimensions. Applying and interpreting tensor decomposition methods to sequences of PV module image data, we seek to uncover and isolate different degradation modes occurring from accelerated stress testing procedures. Further, we consider the contributions of different modes to PV module performance degradations.

XFEL SASE pulses can enhance time-dependent observables

Abstract X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have emerged as powerful sources of short and intense x-ray pulses. We propose a simple and robust procedure which takes advantage of the inherent stochasticity of self-amplified stimulated emission (SASE) pulses to enhance the time-resolution and signal strength of the recorded data. Notably, the proposed method is able to enhance the average signal without knowledge of the signal strength of individual shots. Simple metrics for the probe pulses are introduced, such as an effective pulse duration applicable to SASE pulses characterised in the time domain using e.g. an X-band transverse cavity. The approach is evaluated using simulated and real pulse data in the context of ultrafast electron dynamics in a molecule. Utilising H 2 as a model system, we demonstrate the efficacy of the method theoretically, successfully enhancing the predicted nonresonant ultrafast x-ray scattering signal associated with electron dynamics. The method presented is broadly applicable and offers a general strategy for enhancing time-dependent observables at XFELs.

Structure Perception in 3D Point Clouds

Understanding human perception is critical to the design of effective visualizations. The relative benefits of using 2D versus 3D techniques for data visualization is a complex decision space, with varying levels of uncertainty and disagreement in both the literature and in practice. This study aims to add easily reproducible, empirical evidence on the role of depth cues in perceiving structures or patterns in 3D point clouds. We describe a method to synthesize a 3D point cloud that contains a 3D structure, where 2D projections of the data strongly resemble a Gaussian distribution. We performed a within-subjects structure identification study with 128 participants that compared scatterplot matrices (canonical 2D projections) and 3D scatterplots under three types of motion: rotation, xy-translation, and z-translation. We found that users could consistently identify three separate hidden structures under rotation, while those structures remained hidden in the scatterplot matrices and under translation. This work contributes a set of 3D point clouds that provide definitive examples of 3D patterns perceptible in 3D scatterplots under rotation but imperceptible in 2D scatterplots.
