Combined EDL-Mobility Planning for Planetary Missions

Abstract

Goals:(A) Develop data products that support decision making for coupled, multi-opportunity EDL/Mobility problems: (1) Site-specific decisions (2) Site selection motivated quantitative comparisons between different sites. (B) Provide an mission analysis/study tool for: (1) Systematic tradeoff between EDL and Mobility (2) Determining the relationship between selected Figure-of-Merits and key mission & system parameters

Second Generation Prototype Design and Testing for a High Altitude Venus Balloon

This paper describes the development of a second generation prototype balloon intended for flight in the upper atmosphere of Venus. The design of this new prototype incorporates lessons learned from the construction and testing of the first generation prototype, including finite element analyses of the balloon stresses and deformations, measured leak performance after handling and packaging, permeability and optical property measurements on material samples, and sulfuric acid testing. An improved design for the second generation prototype was formulated based on these results, although the spherical shape and 5.5 m diameter size were retained. The resulting balloon has a volume of 87 cubic meters and is capable of carrying a 45 kg payload at a 55 km altitude at Venus. The design and fabrication of the new prototype is described, along with test data for inflation and leakage performance.

Athlete: A Mobility and Manipulation System for the Moon

A robotic vehicle called ATHLETE - the All-Terrain Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer is described, along with initial results of Field tests of two prototype vehicles. This vehicle concept is capable of efficient rolling mobility on moderate terrain and walking mobility on extreme terrain. Each limb has a quick-disconnect tool adapter so that it can perform general purpose handling, assembly, maintenance, and servicing tasks using any or all of the limbs.

The Mars Microbeam Raman Spectrometer (MMRS): From Concept to Category-1 Proposal

Laser Raman Spectroscopy is flexible and can be deployed in many ways. The Mars Microbeam Raman Spectrometer (MMRS) is tailored for rover-based mobility platform and for Mars fundamental science objectives. The MMRS was initiated by science requirements to determine mineralogy, mineral chemistry, and molecular phase identification, including organics. MMRS is ready for any near term mission to Mars and the Moon. Science is the driving force for development.
