Groundwater and Terrestrial Water Storage

Abstract

Terrestrial water storage (TWS) comprises groundwater, soil moisture, surface water, snow,and ice. Groundwater typically varies more slowly than the other TWS components because itis not in direct contact with the atmosphere, but often it has a larger range of variability onmultiannual timescales (Rodell and Famiglietti, 2001; Alley et al., 2002). In situ groundwaterdata are only archived and made available by a few countries. However, monthly TWSvariations observed by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE; Tapley et al.,2004) satellite mission, which launched in 2002, are a reasonable proxy for unconfinedgroundwater at climatic scales.

Big Cypress Water Resources: Using Earth Observations to Assess Water Quality in Big Cypress Reservation, FL

Upstream agricultural development and runoff are driving harmful algal blooms in the Big Cypress Reservation. The Seminole Tribe of Florida Environmental Resource Management Department monitors water quality in the Big Cypress Reservation, located on the north end of Big Cypress National Preserve. The Environmental Resource Management Department aims to incorporate Earth observations into its investigative approach, which consists of Geographic Information Systems and in situ water sampling. We assessed the feasibility of using Earth observations to measure harmful algal blooms over time and identify vulnerable areas. We analyzed data from multiple remote sensing platforms and sensors, including Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Spectrometer(TIRS), Landsat 9 TIRS-2, Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager 2, Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument, and Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument. We determined that it was challenging to use Sentinel-3, Landsat 8, and Landsat 9 imagery for monitoring the canals within the Reservation, and that Sentinel-2 was the most capable platform for the study area. Using Sentinel-2, we created spectral indices for the detection of algal blooms. We used these indices to measure algal blooms at 8 stations across the Big Cypress Reservation. We then created time series and seasonal decompositions of in situ water sample data and indices to visualize relationships between datasets, along with correlation matrices. Our correlations were not conclusive. However, we found that the spectral indices have the potential to detect algal blooms. Lastly, we evaluated Maxar WorldView-3 imagery and found that using data from sensors with higher spatial resolutions would improve results.

Rhode Island Ecological Conservation: Methods for Monitoring Rhode Island Habitats: Contributing to a Framework for Targeted Conservation and Management

Global avian population decline since the 1970s is largely attributable to habitat loss and degradation from anthropogenic disturbances. NASA DEVELOP’s Rhode Island Ecological Conservation team partnered with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island to compute land use land cover (LULC) maps of Rhode Island to aid in the conservation of the state’s 140 bird species. This project aimed to support the partner’s land acquisition strategies with updated and specific LULC classifications showing potential bird-habitat locations across the state. We incorporated remotely sensed data from Landsat 8 and 9 Operational Land Imager (OLI) into LULC maps using unsupervised classification techniques in ArcGIS Pro and supervised classification in Google Earth Engine. We generated six land classifications for 2023, which showed land cover dominated by upland habitats (forests, scrub/shrub, and grasslands), followed by development. We used TerrSet’s Land Change Modeler to forecast LULC change through 2043, using 2011 and 2021 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) land cover maps derived from Landsat 8 and 9 imagery. Project results suggest that non-urban upland and wetland habitats will decrease over time, while development will continue to encroach on non-urban avian habitats. Our maps and associated data will allow for more efficient land acquisition and management efforts to support avian habitat conservation across Rhode Island. Our study shows that data acquisition and processing from open data sources is feasible and further analysis can be done through GIS classification tools. More analysis is needed beyond this study to obtain more detailed land cover maps, though Audubon can aid its targeted conservation efforts with our current, historic, and forecasted LULC maps.

Sarasota Climate: Monitoring Heat and Assessing Heat Vulnerability to Identify Locations for Heat Mitigation Efforts in Sarasota, Florida

The coastal county of Sarasota, Florida, is located within the humid subtropical climate region and experiences an average of 250 days of sunshine every year. The county has large, urbanized communities which are vulnerable to urban heat island (UHI) effects. These rapidly growing communities contribute to the increasing surface temperatures and placing more residents at risk of heat-related illness. In partnership with Sarasota County Sustainability, the Sarasota Climate team utilized Earth observation data from NASA Landsat 8 and Landsat 9’s Thermal Infrared Sensors (TIRS), and the International Space Station’s Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) to model UHI effects within the county during the Summer for the last five years, 2019 to 2023. Data analysis with the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) and Urban Heat Exposure Assessment Tempe 1.0 (UHEAT 1.0) models and within ModelBuilder produced maps that identified the land surface temperature (LST) variance within the county, the regions that are most susceptible to extreme heat, and areas least capable of mitigating the effects of UHI. The results revealed that heat intensity varies significantly across Sarasota County with the highest temperatures in the more developed western part of the county. Additionally, the team identified that there are at least three vulnerable communities that exist in high-heat regions, including North Sarasota, Venice, and North Port. These regions have an overlap between socioeconomic sensitivity and environmental hazard that indicate a high priority in future heat mitigation efforts.
