Live Virtual Constructive (LVC): Interface Control Document (ICD) for the LVC Gateway

Abstract

This Interface Control Document (ICD) documents and tracks the necessary information required for the Live Virtual and Constructive (LVC) systems components as well as protocols for communicating with them in order to achieve all research objectives captured by the experiment requirements. The purpose of this ICD is to clearly communicate all inputs and outputs from the subsystem components.

Evolution of A Distributed Live, Virtual, Constructive Environment for Human in the Loop Unmanned Aircraft Testing

NASA's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration in the National Airspace System Project is conducting human in the loop simulations and flight testing intended to reduce barriers associated with enabling routine airspace access for unmanned aircraft. The primary focus of these tests is interaction of the unmanned aircraft pilot with the display of detect and avoid alerting and guidance information. The project's integrated test and evaluation team was charged with developing the test infrastructure. As with any development effort, compromises in the underlying system architecture and design were made to allow for the rapid prototyping and open-ended nature of the research. In order to accommodate these design choices, a distributed test environment was developed incorporating Live, Virtual, Constructive, (LVC) concepts. The LVC components form the core infrastructure support simulation of UAS operations by integrating live and virtual aircraft in a realistic air traffic environment. This LVC infrastructure enables efficient testing by leveraging the use of existing assets distributed across multiple NASA Centers. Using standard LVC concepts enable future integration with existing simulation infrastructure.

Developing an Adaptable NextGen Interface for the UAS Ground Control Station

Motivation: NextGen traffic infrastructure is in place to support manned aircraft operations. However, the UAS ground control station (GCS) adds a data interface requirement that is not yet fully accounted for in the NextGen data service architecture. Existing NextGen data service is focused on aircraft, not the GCS. Smaller UAS may not have the payload or power capacity to support the additional equipment. Innovation: Provide a mechanism for a UAS regardless of size, payload, bandwidth, and power capacity to gain access to NextGen data-sourced traffic information in real-time.

UAS in the NAS Flight Test Series 3 Overview

The UAS Integration in the NAS Project is conducting a series of flight tests to acheive the following objectives: 1.) Validate results previously collected during project simulations with live data 2.) Evaluate TCAS IISS interoperability 3.) Test fully integrated system in a relevant live test environment 4.) Inform final DAA and C2 MOPS 5.) Reduce risk for Flight Test Series 4.
