CSW Best Practices

Abstract

During the development of the CMR (Common Metadata Repository) (CMR) for the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS), CSW (Catalog Service for the Web) a number of best practices came to light. Given that the ESIP (Earth Science Information Partners) Discovery Cluster is committed to interoperability and standards in earth data discovery this seemed like a convenient moment to provide Best Practices to the organization in the same way we did for OpenSearch for this widely-used standard.

Google Dataset Search and CMR

Searching for earth science data from scratch has, traditionally, been a non-trivial process. Using commercial search engines a starting point, it has not been trivial to locate information and services related to a science users needs. The advent of Google Dataset Search has improved that process. CMR has leveraged the schema.org dataset feature to provide semantic markup on our collection landing pages that are used by Google Dataset Search to provide results that map directly to a scientist's needs and provide an intuitive gateway in to the NASA Earthdata environment.

EOSDIS CMR: Shifting Data Discovery & Use into a Higher Gear

Earth observation data comes in many forms, formats, and from a multitude of sources; to make the best of a very large and diverse data catalog (data from a dozen different national Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) as well as international sources), NASA has created a one-stop-shop for earth data consumers to view, find, and get the data they need regardless of its original source or format, which is powered by a Common Metadata Repository (CMR). CMR is the underpinning that allows for the visualization, search, discovery, manipulation, and acquisition of a variety of datasets, and as such it is constantly evolving to do more and serve our communities better; CMR has embraced community ownership by making itself an open-source API, being compatible with Catalog Services for the Web (CSW) and OpenSearch APIs, and by encouraging the user community to make and share improvements.

NASA's Big Earth Data Initiative Accomplishments

The goal of NASA's effort for BEDI is to improve the usability, discoverability, and accessibility of Earth Observation data in support of societal benefit areas. Accomplishments: In support of BEDI goals, datasets have been entered into Common Metadata Repository(CMR), made available via the Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP), have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registered for the dataset, and to support fast visualization many layers have been added in to the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS).
