Abstract

NASA's SCENIC project aims to simplify and reduce the cost of space mission planning by creating analysis capabilities which are integrated with relevant analysis parameters specific to SCaN assets and SCaN supported user missions. The Integrated Tradespace Analysis of Communications Architectures (ITACA) will provide an all-in-one package for various analysis capabilities that normally require add-ons or multiple tools to complete. The ITACA tool will be responsible for assessing the given network architecture and generating a schedule for the missions as well as the assets. ITACA will allow users to evaluate the quality of service of a given network and determine whether or not the network will satisfy the mission's requirements. ITACA is currently under development, and during the spring of 2018 major development in the tools scheduling techniques were completed. A total of seven different techniques were completed.

Cognitive Engine One: A Cross-Layer Framework for Autonomy in Multi-Provider Space Communications Environments

Spacecraft information needs, along with the communications environments in which data transfers occur, are becoming increasingly dynamic. Earth orbit is served by dozens of ground station and relay satellite providers – each with unique protocols and service capabilities. In this context, we present a system to automate end-to-end space communications across the protocol stack for each of several providers. The proposed system schedules contacts with providers, configures point-to-point RF links, and ensures data is transferred to its destination. Data monitoring and rescheduling provide an automated failover capability in the event of unsuccessful contacts. We verify system performance in a high-fidelity emulation testbed. Results from several scenarios demonstrate favorable system performance across a variety of mission use cases.

SmallSat Ka-band Operations User Terminal (SKOUT)

SKOUT is a Ka-band communications system for future NASA mission spacecraft that operates with both NASA and commercial relay satellite constellations in GEO and potentially LEO as well as direct-to-Earth (DTE) networks. This project encompasses the development and demonstration of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) 5G, Ka band, phased array technologies compatible with commercial space networks, including actively phases array antennas, software defined modems, power optimization algorithms, and high data rate to ground using the DVB-S2 standard.
