Abstract

Lunar simulants are terrestrial materials that mimic aspects of lunar regolith for testing of technology that would interact with lunar surface material. The goal of simulants is mission risk reduction by providing confidence, through testing with simulants, that a technology will perform as designed on the lunar surface. Lunar simulants are often used in education and outreach activities to increase public knowledge about lunar surface materials and to inspire the next generation of space explorers.

RF Metrology of Lunar Highlands Regolith Simulant NU-LHT-2M

Understanding the electrical properties of lunar regolith is vital to modeling radiofrequency(RF) propagation on the lunar surface a fundamental step in planning lunar surface missions. Near the lunar south pole, the regolith has yet to be directly sampled and thus there remains uncertainty in the electrical properties of the regolith. The regolith simulant NU-LHT-2M is a highlands simulant that is representative of the expected chemical composition of the regolith near the lunar south pole. Previous studies have investigated properties of NU-LHT at UHF and S-band[1]. Future missions to the lunar south pole are expected to utilize X and Ka-band for direct-to-Earth links and UHF, S-band, C-band, and Ka-band for lunar surface communication[2]. As a result, it is necessary to electrically characterize the lunar regolith at these frequencies. In this paper, coaxial impedance dielectric reflectometry is performed on the NU-LHT-2M simulant using a commercially available soil permittivity measurement device. This study serves as a preliminary measurement of the simulant and may lead to enhanced efficacy of the measurement hardware for future applications.

Additive Construction with Mobile Emplacement: Multifaceted Planetary Construction Materials Development

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Additive Construction with Mobile Emplacement (ACME) project is developing construction materials with which infrastructure elements, including habitats, will be additively constructed for planetary surface missions. These materials must meet requirements such as the ability to be produced from available in-situ resources to eliminate the cost of launching materials from Earth, the ability to be emplaced via three dimensional building techniques, the ability to resist aging in extreme environments including radiation and micrometeorite bombardment, and the ability to provide the necessary structural integrity for a given building. This paper reviews the constraints placed on such planetary construction materials and details the work of the ACME team in characterizing materials that could one day construct planetary surface structures on Mars or the Moon. Material compositions, compressive strength, and requirements for additive construction on planetary surfaces are discussed. Due to the multifunctional requirements of the material, an optimization is necessary to balance between the site-specific regolith composition, emplacement via additive construction techniques, and characteristics of the final structure.

A Carbonaceous Chondrite Based Simulant of Phobos

In support of an ESA-funded concept study considering a sample return mission, a simulant of the Martian moon Phobos was needed. There are no samples of the Phobos regolith, therefore none of the four characteristics normally used to design a simulant are explicitly known for Phobos. Because of this, specifications for a Phobos simulant were based on spectroscopy, other remote measurements, and judgment. A composition based on the Tagish Lake meteorite was assumed. The requirement that sterility be achieved, especially given the required organic content, was unusual and problematic. The final design mixed JSC-1A, antigorite, pseudo-agglutinates and gilsonite. Sterility was achieved by radiation in a commercial facility.
