A Tale of Three Capacitor Problems

Abstract

This talk will make a connection among several capacitor-related anomalies and failures that tie to some of the following conditions: reverse bias installation, cracked ceramic, and to minimal extent, elevated equivalent series resistance (ESR). In particular, we will briefly discuss anomalies we have experienced (1) in ground testing involving ceramic capacitors that had been hand soldered or had had touched-up solder joints, (2) in reverse-biased capacitors that have been operating for years on-orbit but that have experienced failures in ground operation and testing, and (3) in ceramic capacitors that exhibited an on-orbit latent defect resulting from cracks, and how these have come together. The talk will provide some lessons learned for recognizing and understanding anomalous behavior involving capacitors.

Quantum critical collapse abhors a naked singularity

Classical critical collapse yields naked singularities from smooth initial data, challenging cosmic censorship, and shaping the spectrum of primordial black holes. We show that one-loop vacuum polarization near the threshold qualitatively changes this outcome by dressing the singularity with a horizon within a controlled semiclassical regime. In analytically tractable Einstein-scalar critical spacetimes, a one-loop $s$-wave treatment linearized around self-similar backgrounds shows that regularity uniquely selects an asymptotically Minkowskian, vacuum-polarization state. Its renormalized stress tensor carries a universal quantum growing mode that competes with the classical unstable mode, shifts the critical point, and generates a trapped surface along with a finite mass gap at the new threshold, thereby enforcing horizon formation even under arbitrary fine-tuning. In primordial collapse, the threshold shift enters exponentially into the formation fraction, while the mass gap truncates the low-mass tail, suggesting potentially important consequences for the predicted mass spectrum. Furthermore, these results provide a self-consistent semiclassical treatment of critical collapse and yield sharp predictions within the one-loop, near-critical, linearized regime.

Supersymmetric lattice theories on curved space

We show how to construct Hamiltonian lattice theories with one exact supersymmetry on arbitrary triangulations of curved space in any number of dimensions. Both bosons and fermions satisfy discrete Kähler-Dirac equations. The quantization of the fermions proceeds by imposing conventional anticommutation relations while the bosons require a modification of the usual canonical commutator. On regular lattices we construct parity, time reversal and translation-by-one (shift) symmetries. We argue that the latter are generically noninvertible symmetries. We also show how to couple these degrees of freedom to background gauge fields which leads to a theory with enhanced supersymmetry.

Generalized Hall conductivities in local commuting projector models: Generalized symmetries and protected surface modes

Hall conductivities are important characterizations of phases of matter. It is known that nonzero Hall conductivities are difficult to realize in local commuting projector lattice models due to no-go theorems in (2+1)⁢D. In this work we construct local commuting projector models in (2+1)⁢D and (3+1)⁢D with nonzero generalized Hall conductivities for ordinary and higher-form continuous symmetries on tensor product Hilbert space of finite local dimension. The model is given by a standard ℤ 𝑁 toric code, but the symmetries do not admit expression in terms of on-site charge operators. The symmetry do not have local charges or currents on the lattice in the absence of boundaries, but there is still a notion of Hall conductivities that coincide with the continuum field theories. We construct protected gapless boundaries of the lattice models using modified Villain formalism. The generalized Hall conductivities are computed by surface currents as well as bulk flux insertion and many-body Chern number.
