Abstract

The plots included in this NF-1676 were collected during a recent wind tunnel test at the 11’x11’ Transonic test section of the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. The data is not SBU or ITAR since the images are qualitative and do not share model measurements. The on-body data is Delta Cp RMS. The off-body data is Time-Variance of the Shadowgraph intensity. No tunnel conditions other than Mach, Alpha, Beta, and Tunnel Drive Speed (RPM) are shared. Most importantly, dynamic pressure and static pressure are not included.

Code Verification of Multiple Physics-Fidelity Models in Hypersonic Aerodynamics

Hypersonic aerodynamics models exist across a range of physics fidelities with associated computational expenses. These models may be run independently or in a multifidelity framework that leverages their complementary strengths of speed for lower-fidelity and accuracy for higher-fidelity models. This work presents applied code verification of two lower-fidelity models contained within the Sandia hypersonic aerodynamics code. Each model has a different form that requires individualized verification approaches, including comparison to analytical solutions as well as manufactured solutions with order-of-accuracy testing. In conclusion, results of this effort include the identification and resolution of code errors and shortcomings, as well as the demonstration of code correctness and consistency for both models.

Temperature Measurements in Hypersonic Wind Tunnels via Femtosecond Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering

A femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (fs CARS) instrument is developed to perform gas-phase thermometry in cold-flow hypersonic wind tunnels. Measurements are reported for Mach 8 and 14 pure-nitrogen flows. The fs CARS instrument includes a 100 fs pump/Stokes pulse and a spectrally narrow probe pulse from a second harmonic bandwidth compressor. Important experimental considerations such as limits on the pump/Stokes pulse energy are discussed. The fs CARS focusing and collimating optics are mounted on a two-axis translation stage system to scan the measurement location during a 30 second wind tunnel run. Single-laser-shot rotational CARS spectra are recorded at the laser repetition rate of 1 kHz in the wind tunnel freestream and near simple cone models. Spectral fitting is used to determine quantitative gas temperatures. Freestream temperatures at Mach 8 and 14 spanned ranges of 40–75 and 35–50 K, respectively, depending on tunnel operating conditions. Temperature variations across the central 100 mm span of the wind tunnel were quantified. Measured temperature jumps across conical bow shocks from various models varied by less than 1% from predicted values. Hypersonic boundary layer measurements were demonstrated. In conclusion, these measurements illustrate the utility and robustness of this instrument for the study of complex fluid flow phenomena in challenging ground test facilities.

Laser Measurements and Modeling of Shock Tunnel Freestream Velocity and Multispecies Thermal Nonequilibrium

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and nitric oxide molecular tagging velocimetry (NO-MTV) were used to characterize the freestream in Sandia’s Hypersonic Shock Tunnel (HST) using a burst-mode laser operated at 100 kHz. Experiments were performed at nominal freestream velocities of 3 and 4 km/s using both air and N 2 test gas. The CARS diagnostic provides nonequilibrium characterization of the flow by measuring vibrational and rotational temperatures of N 2 and O 2 , which are compared to NO temperatures from separate laser absorption experiments. Simultaneous, collinear freestream velocities were measured using NO MTV along with pitot pressure measurements. Furthermore, this extensive freestream dataset is compared to nonequilibrium CFD that is capable of modeling species-specific, vibrational temperatures throughout the nozzle expansion. Significant nonequilibrium between vibrational and rotational temperatures was measured at each flow condition. N 2 exhibits the most nonequilibrium, followed by O 2 and NO. The CFD model captures this trend, although it consistently overpredicts N 2 and O 2 vibrational temperatures. At 3 km/s, the modeled NO nonequilibrium is underpredicted, whereas it is overpredicted at 4 km/s. Good agreement is seen between CFD and the velocity and rotational temperature measurements. Experiments with water added to the test gas yielded no discernable difference in vibrational relaxation.
