Abstract

The NASA Ames Aerothermodynamics Branch provides NASA with integrated modeling, simulation, and test capabilities in the areas of aerothermodynamics, shock layer radiation, and entry system design. Our core capabilities include CFD simulation for entry vehicles at hypersonic velocities, including arc jet facility flow modeling and characterization; modeling and testing of shock layer kinetics and radiation; development of flow-field diagnostic techniques; and aero- and aerothermal testing via ballistic ranges. This presentation provides a brief technical introduction to the branches work and our capabilities in these areas.

Experimental Investigation of Block-TPS Fence/Gap Roughness Effects on Transition Onset and Turbulent Heating at Mach 6

An experimental investigation of boundary-layer transition and convective surface heating on wind tunnel models that simulated aeroshells comprised of multiple blocks of thermal protection system (TPS) material has been performed. Two representative entry vehicle geometries, a sphere-cone aeroshell and a sphere-cone aeroshell, were considered. Multiple cast ceramic models of each geometry were fabricated with varying fence heights or gap depths to represent gap fillers that either protrude above, or are recessed below, the TPS blocks due to differential ablation during reentry. Wind tunnel testing was performed at Mach 6 over a range of Reynolds numbers sufficient to produce laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow. Convective surface heating and boundary-layer transition onset data were obtained using global phosphor thermography. The experimental heating data are presented herein, as are comparisons to laminar and turbulent smooth-wall heat transfer distributions from computational flow field simulations.

Time-Varying Entry Heating Profile Replication with a Rotating Arc Jet Test Article

A new approach to arc jet testing that replicates the time-varying conditions of atmospheric entry heating was demonstrated. The concept relies on the spatial variation of heat flux and pressure around a cylindrical test article. The spatial variation is transformed to a temporal variation at one location by rotating the test article during exposure to the arc jet stream. The test article rotation mechanism is based on a programmable stepper motor. An entry heat flux profile was mapped to the cylinders heat flux distribution to determine the rotation angle vs. time executed by the mechanism. A series of arc jet tests with instrumented cylindrical TPS test articles was conducted to prove the concept.

Current Investments in the NASA Entry Systems Modeling Project

This talk will provide an overview of investments in the Entry Systems Modeling project, along with some context of where the effort sits in the overall Space Technology EDL Portfolio. Technical highlights, particularly with referent to work on Ablation Modeling, will be given. Future directions will be discussed.
