The wavefront sensor is the most critical component of an adaptive optics system. Most astronomical systems use one of a small number of altenatives, notably the Shack-Hartmann or the curvature sensor; these are sensitive to the first and second derivative of the wavefront phase, respectively.
This paper characterizes the performance of a single deformable mirror Shack-Hartmann natural guide star AO system based on the present-generation digital signal processors TMS320C6701 from Texas Instruments.
