We describe progress toward realizing a new architecture for focal plane arrays for the Submillimeter and Far- Infrared (FIR) bands. This architecture is based on a detector design utilizing distributed hot{electron transition edge sensors (TES) coupled to slot antenna elements. Arrays utilizing this type of detector can be considerably easier to manufacture than membrane-isolated TES arrays, because the need for micro-machining is eliminated. We present background and rationale for this new array architecture and details of a new antenna design for an imaging polarimeter, which yields greater bandwidth than past designs. In addition, we describe a cryogenic facility for testing these arrays.
A terahertz Hot-Electron Bolometer (HEB) mixer design using device substrates based on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology is described. This substrate technology allows very thin chips (6 pm) with almost arbitrary shape to be manufactured, so that they can be tightly fitted into a waveguide structure and operated at very high frequencies with only low risk for power leakages and resonance modes. The NbTiN-based bolometers are contacted by gold beam-leads, while other beamleads are used to hold the chip in place in the waveguide test fixture. The initial tests yielded an equivalent receiver noise temperature of 3460 K double-sideband at a local oscillator frequency of 1.462 THz and an intermediate frequency of 1.4 GHz.
This paper describes a superconducting hot electron bolometer mixer that uses diffusion rather than interactions with phonons as a cooling mechanism for the hot electrons. The bolometer is a 0.14 µm; wide niobium microbridge with a length less than 0.5 µm;. The submicron length ensures rapid diffusion of the hot electrons into contacting gold films. This mechanism is believed to be fast enough to allow mixer operation with intermediate frequencies of several GHz. An electron cooling time of 55 ps is inferred from DC resistance versus temperature measurements, indicating a roll-off frequency close to 3 GHz. Initial receiver measurements using a two-tuner waveguide mixer confirm heterodyne mixing at 532 GHz with an intermediate frequency of 1.4 GHz.
