Event Detection and Identification During Autonomous Interplanetary Navigation

Abstract

An autonomous/adaptive interplanetary navigation architecture employing neural networks and genetic algorithms is being developed that will alert navigators when a shift from optimal to suboptimal filtering occurs and assist in modifying the filter parameters to resume optical tracking.

Navigation of the Roman Space Telescope and the Space Weather Follow-On Missions – Strategies and Pre-Mission Analyses

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is supporting two large-scale Lagrange-Point Orbiting missions set to launch in the next two years; Space Weather Follow On (SWFO-L1) in 2025 and Roman Space Telescope (RST) in 2026. SWFO-L1 will operate in a Sun-Earth L1 Lissajous orbit and RST will operate in a Sun-Earth L2 quasi-halo orbit. As with many NASA missions, the engineering challenges are as unique as the scientific objectives. The navigation systems for these missions must meet the specific, demanding, and evolving needs of both spacecraft.

Navigation Filter Design Best Practices

Onboard navigation and attitude estimation systems are at the heart of almost all of NASA’s missions, either on launch vehicles, robotic science spacecraft, or on crewed human exploration vehicles. Best practices for attitude estimation systems/filters are scattered throughout open literature, however, even within NASA there has been no previous attempt to codify this knowledge into a readily available design handbook. Without such a document, it is possible for isolated practitioners to lack understanding and appreciation of many tried and true approaches to successful and robust filter design and the implied cost/benefit trades associated with them. To aid designers of current and future missions, a handbook of navigation filter best practices has been developed and is introduced here. The development of this document is also an outgrowth of a recommendation made in an NESC summary of lessons learned from the DARPA Orbital Express mission to utilize best practices for rendezvous navigation filter design. With this handbook, future designers have a reference that establishes NASA’s best practices.

Seeker Free-Flying Inspector GNC System Overview

Seeker is an ultra-low cost approach to highly automated extravehicular inspection of crewed or uncrewed spacecraft that has been designed and built in-house at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). The first version of Seeker is intended to be an incremental development towards an advanced inspection capability. This effort builds on past free-flying inspector development efforts such as the Autonomous Extravehicular Activity Robotic Camera Sprint (AERCam Sprint) and Mini AERCam. Seeker was funded as an International Space Station (ISS) "X-by" Project, which required delivery of the vehicle approximately one year after authority to proceed and within the budget of $1.8 million. Seeker will fly onboard the NG-11 Cygnus mission in 2019 and will deploy after Cygnus' primary mission is completed. Seeker will perform inspection-like maneuvers within 50 meters of the target vehicle (Cygnus) and then dispose itself. The Seeker Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) system is composed entirely of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and space-rated COTS items, an inertial-relative Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter (MEKF), point-to-point guidance (with various additional modes such as stationkeeping), proportional-integral translational control, phase plane rotational control, and a state machine for automated mission moding with minimal ground input.
