Characterization of the NASA Glenn Research Center 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel Supersonic Test Section (2020 Test)

Recent customer requirements for improved Mach number stability for sonic boom signature measurements has piqued interest in the use of the solid-wall supersonic test section in the NASA Glenn Research Center 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel. To supply customers with understanding of the operating conditions and flow quality in this region of the tunnel, characterization tests were performed in the solid-wall supersonic test section in January 2020. The test entry covered the operating range of the facility for three-drive-motor operation. Calibration models were generated along with an improved understanding of operational considerations for this region of the tunnel. The data set acquired included centerline axial and planar flow-field distributions to quantify test section flow quality. The collected data provided an improved understanding of operational considerations for this region of the tunnel as well as allowed for the development of detailed calibration models for the solid-wall supersonic test section.

The Three-Dimensional Bow Shock of Mars as Observed by MAVEN

The Martian magnetosphere is a product of the interaction of Mars with the interplanetary magnetic field and the supersonic solar wind. The location of the bow shock has been previously modeled as conic sections using data from spacecraft such as Phobos 2, Mars Global Surveyor, and Mars Express. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission spacecraft arrived in orbit about Mars in November 2014 resulting in thousands of crossings to date. We identify over 1,000 bow shock crossings. We model the bow shock as a three-dimensional surface accommodating asymmetry caused by crustal magnetic fields. By separating MAVEN's bow shock encounters based on solar condition, we also investigate the variability of the surface. We find that the shock surface varies in shape and location in response to changes in the solar radiation, the solar wind Mach number, dynamic pressure of the solar wind, and the relative local time location of the strong crustal magnetic fields (i.e., whether they are on the dayside or on the nightside).

Dynamic Stability Analysis of Blunt Body Entry Vehicles Using Time-Lagged Aftbody Pitching Moments

This analysis defines an analytic model for the pitching motion of blunt bodies during atmospheric entry. The proposed model is independent of the pitch damping sum coefficient present in the standard formulation of the equations of motion describing pitch oscillations of a decelerating blunt body, instead using the principle of a time-lagged aftbody moment as the forcing function for oscillation divergence. Four parameters, all with intuitive physical relevance, are introduced to fully define the aftbody moment and the associated time delay. It is shown that the dynamic oscillation responses typical to blunt bodies can be produced using hysteresis of the aftbody moment in place of the pitch damping coefficient. The approach used in this investigation is shown to be useful in understanding the governing physical mechanisms for blunt body dynamic stability and in guiding vehicle and mission design requirements. A validation case study using simulated ballistic range test data is conducted. From this, parameter identification is carried out through the use of a least squares optimizing routine. Results show good agreement with the limited existing literature for the parameters identified, suggesting that the model proposed could be validated by an experimental ballistic range test series. The trajectories produced by the identified parameters were found to match closely those from the MER ballistic range tests for a wide array of initial conditions and can be identified with a reasonable number of ballistic range shots and computational effort.
