Certification Concepts for AI/ML Systems

Abstract

This presentation goes over some of the tools developed at NASA Ames in the Robust Software Engineering group for the assurance and certification of autonomous systems. The research themes presented include improving safety and risk assessment as early as possible in the lifecycle, elicitation and formalization of requirements to facilitate traceability throughout the lifecycle, especially when formal methods are used, algorithms, tools and techniques for the V&V of ML-enabled systems, advanced testing, use of runtime monitoring to ease use of untrusted components, and contribution to draft regulatory standards and assistance in producing and presenting certification evidences.

Constellation: The autonomous control and data acquisition system for dynamic experimental setups

The operation of instruments and detectors in laboratory or beamline environments presents a complex challenge, requiring stable operation of multiple concurrent devices, often controlled by separate hardware and software solutions. These environments frequently undergo modifications, such as the inclusion of different auxiliary devices depending on the experiment or facility, adding further complexity. The successful management of such dynamic configurations demands a flexible and robust system capable of controlling data acquisition, monitoring experimental setups, enabling seamless reconfiguration, and integrating new devices with limited effort. This paper presents Constellation, a flexible and network-distributed control and data acquisition software framework tailored to laboratory and beamline environments, that addresses the limitations of existing solutions. The framework is designed with a focus on extensibility, providing a streamlined interface for instrument integration. It supports efficient system setup via network discovery mechanisms, promotes stability through autonomous operational features, and provides comprehensive documentation and supporting tools for operators and application developers such as controllers and logging interfaces. At the core of the architectural design is the autonomy of the individual components, called satellites, which can make independent decisions about their operation and communicate these decisions to other components. This paper introduces the design principles and framework architecture of Constellation, presents the available graphical user interfaces, shares insights from initial successful deployments, and provides an outlook on future developments and applications.

Autonomous alloy composition optimization using molecular dynamics guided by a large language model

Here, we present an autonomous materials discovery framework that couples a large language model (LLM) with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to optimize Fe–Cr–Mn alloy compositions for tensile strength. Starting from six distinct compositions, the LLM operated as an intelligent agent, iteratively proposing changes based on prior simulation results and constraints. Over 50 iterations per case, the LLM adaptively explored the composition space, identifying high-strength regions, not easily accessible by conventional methods. The highest strength, 18.7 GPa, was achieved with Fe 71 Cr 25 Mn 4 composition, identified from a Fe 75 Cr 20 Mn 5 starting point. The LLM autonomously adjusted its strategy in real time, demonstrating closed-loop decision-making using commodity hardware. This approach showcases the potential of LLMs as scientific co-pilots, capable of accelerating materials discovery and generalizable to other domains like biology and drug design.

ATTRACTOR: Autonomy Teaming and TRAjectories for Complex Trusted Operational Reliability

Autonomous systems (AS) are crucial to realizing the vision of new, complex transportation modes, such as advanced air mobility (AAM) and urban air mobility (UAM). A chief barrier to induction of AS into aviation is insufficient understanding of AS reliability in time-critical and safety-critical environments—an obstacle to certification. ATTRACTOR is aimed at building a basis for certification of classes of autonomous cyber-physical-human systems (CPHS) via establishing metrics and models of trustworthiness and trust in multi-agent team interactions, analyzable trajectories, explainability of computational algorithms (explainable artificial intelligence, or XAI), and persistent modeling and simulation, in the context of missions planning and operation. By “building a basis for certification,” we mean acquiring an understanding of when a system is trustworthy and developing computable means to estimate trustworthiness and trust in order to eventually inform functional requirements that contribute to certification. The outcomes are applicable not just to aviation but to all domains that rely on autonomous systems.
