AAM Project: High Density Vertiplex (HDV) Research and Capabilities

Abstract

NASA is currently engaged in dedicated research into vertiports through its Advanced Air Mobility Project, housed within the Airspace Operations Safety Program (AOSP), through a Sub-Project referred to as High Density Vertiplex, or simply HDV. This effort’s mission is to develop a reference automation architecture for vertiports that will enable operations to scale to the density levels envisioned for future environments. Through the development of the HDV Concept of Operations and accompanying architecture documents a research roadmap was developed as part of the effort's formulation process that laid the foundations for the work and schedule to be completed as part of the HDV scope and technical challenge. This presentation provides the background of the HDV Sub-Project and outlines the concept and capabilities as it has developed to date. Summaries of the completed work package and status of current work package will be provided with details on specific capabilities and supporting integration developments.

Missed Approach Procedures in Advanced Air Mobility: Conceptual Exploration

The High Density Vertiplex Sub-Project, as part of NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Project, has been in collaboration with a team from Wisk Aero focusing on vertiport operations, procedures, and concept development. A particular area of focus has been on the development of missed approach scenarios and procedures that highlight the potential changes in the nearer- and further-term operational time frames. Such changes relate to topic areas such as airspace design, automation and autonomy, roles and responsibilities of actors and stakeholders, airspace management services and systems, as well as technologies specific to vertiport operations management. This paper presents the current state of joint concept development through the established collaboration and the application of elements in ongoing testing as part of NASA’s High Density Vertiplex Sub-Project’s research strategy.

Initial Development and Integration of a Vertiport Automation System for Advanced Air Mobility Operations

The High Density Vertiplex Sub-Project, as part of NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Project, has been developing a reference Vertiport Automation System (VAS) to support the management of arrival and departure operations in the terminal area of a vertiport or network of inter-connected vertiports known as a vertiplex. The VAS is potentially a key element of an integrated AAM architecture that will enable greater levels of coordination and predictability for vertiport users through its integration and sharing of information, and greater control of vertiport resources for managing operators. This paper provides an overview of the VAS and a description of an initial implementation that has been integrated into a broader reference architecture as part of ongoing research. Examples from recent simulations are presented with an outline for next steps and considerations.
