Abstract

NASA GRC maintains various equipment to calibrate and characterize photovoltaic cells at Air Mass Zero (AM0) standards and in simulated space environments. These characterization facilities are critical to developing and advancing solar cell technologies, allowing advancements in a wide variety of NASA projects (Artemis, Lunar Gateway, Human Landing System, etc.).

NASA GRC maintains various equipment to calibrate and characterize photovoltaic devices to Air Mass Zero standards and different space-simulated environments. These characterization capabilities are critical to developing and advancing photovoltaic devices, allowing advancements in various NASA-related projects (Artemis, Lunar Gateway, Human Landing System, etc.). Our facilities include an X-25 Triple source Solar Simulator, G2V Sunbrick, Angstrom Designs pLEDss (Programmable LED Solar Simulator), Thermal Balance facility, ER-2 High Altitude aircraft calibration.

Evaluating Electroluminescence Imaging and Image Processing as a Quantitative Solar Cell Characterization Method

Mitigating dust accumulation on the surface of solar arrays is crucial for maintaining maximum power output. We propose investigating electroluminescence imaging paired with image processing as a means of evaluating various dust mitigation techniques. Image processing was able to clearly differentiate between pristine and dusted solar cells. Paired with traditional analysis techniques, this method proves to be a quick and powerful characterization tool.

Solar Array Performance Modeling for NASA’s Artemis Missions

NASA’s Artemis exploration campaign includes multiple elements that utilize photovoltaic power generation. Artemis mission profiles feature a variety of events that can limit solar array generation and stress electrical power system (EPS) performance, including eclipses, propulsive or navigational maneuvers which constrain the positioning of the solar arrays, and spiral trajectories with significant radiation degradation. These features make predicting the performance of the power system particularly important and requires accurate modeling of power generation by the solar arrays under a variety of conditions. One of the tools used to predict spacecraft EPS performance is the System Power Analysis for Capability Evaluation (SPACE) model developed at NASA Glenn Research Center. SPACE is used by NASA to model EPS performance for the Orion crew transport vehicle and the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) of the Gateway space station. This presentation will provide an overview of how SPACE calculates solar array performance, including degradation factors considered and environmental conditions that drive the solar array designs. Additionally, Orion array performance predictions generated by SPACE will be compared to flight data collected during the Artemis I mission.
